Club for club, there's not much difference between a modern or a persimmon when hit on the sweetspot.

Where the modern clubs shine is when you miss the sweetspot.

I heard a story about a pro (story says Tiger) who hit their modern driver with a persimmon driver. On pure contact, the persimmon was only a handful of yards behind the modern driver. The difference showed up in the mis-hit, where the persimmon driver went no further than the modern 3 wood.

That said, the most forgiving driver on the planet - component or OEM - is the Wishon 919THI. A brand new face design gives higher ball speed numbers for misses than any other driver.

I've played it - 'tis true. Even a 3/4" toe-ing still gives me plenty of distance, sure it's shorter than a puring, but it's a longer miss than I'm used to.

I have a bit of a reputation on this forum for purchasing drivers in a similar way that my daughter purchases shoes (OK Robin, I know, I know ). I did try a demonstrator Srixon Z-Ti Driver with 11.5 loft from my clubs pro shop recently and I was very impressed with how it performed. Hmmm, shall I

I think I more appropriate question is 'why shan't you?'

Brian, if it makes you feel any better, I jumped ship 5 times in the last 5 years.... TaylorMade R540, TM R5, TM R7, Cleveland HiBore, Cleveland HiBore XL.

With eBay, it makes it so much easier on the checkbook. I plan on getting a new driver next winter.

As for distance, new drivers add average distance because of mishits. Hit 10 balls with a new high MOI driver vs. old... You should be straighter and longer on average. But your best drive could come with an old school club

IMO, where you can really benefit is the shaft. I have hit the same clubhead with up to 5 different shafts (recently demo'd the Callaway I-MIX FT-5, the one with the changeable shafts). Hit 5 balls with each shaft on a launch monitor. Both Aldila VS Proto and NVS were similar. But the Fujikura, UST and Grafalloy makes were all very different. The feels were all quite different too. Firm/Soft Tip. High/Mid/Low Kick. Tons of different weights. This day and age, you can find the perfect shaft if you give it some time.

Not to mention a new set of Forgans last crimbo and ditched for sexier Mizuno's - you're a club tart Brian, there's no other description.

Two crimbos indeed, this one just gone and the last one - Ok then fourteen months and a bit ago

Fair enough you're not as promiscuous as young Ben but as a matter of interest how long did you keep them for?

I still have them in the garage, they will now probably be my sons set when he is over. I was using them until two weeks ago when I got my Mizzies.

I prefer to consider myself an entertainer of the masses.

All other things being equal, a bigger clubhead is probably better for most people, eh? Yes, take advantage of new technology, why not? Just test 'em before you buy 'em...

Gram for gram and hot heads, being a former long drive guy, I'll take the Ashton X-1. Long, Hot and doesn't resemble a pregnant Volkswagon. I have about 25-30 driver in the garage and hit at all the demo days. The Ashton still rulz!!!

BTW: In most cases it finding the right shaft, not the right head. I build them and test them constantly. Caved in and cracked a few faces in my day.

Callaway FT5 with Aldila NVS X shaft. Long and straight. Also have a new Hyper X by Callaway but NV stiff shaft is too flimsy, will get it changed to an X and see what happens. Also have a Big Bertha 460 with 2 deg closed face and X shaft that is long but have to be careful with that closed face that I don't hit a bullet left... LOL

Tom, I'm looking at fitting a NV65 Stiff in my driver. How high is your swing speed, since you consider it flimsy? Should I - a handicap 20 player - consider X Stiff?

                                Mox,

All shafts have a swing speed rating in MPH. The Aldila site will have this information as to the flex you need for your swing speed.

My speed is between 118 and 126 mph. Most of the time I need a X or even a 2X shaft depending on the shaft profile. A good shop will have a launch monitor to help determine what will fit. Use this only as a starting point, the way a person loads a shaft on the downswing has a lot to do if it is the best fit for them. Not all shafts of the same flex are created equal. I've hit some smooth x-flex shafts like a Fuji Speeder 757 and a peice of rebar Crank Whoopin' Shaft - both were x flex but the profile was different.

                                Hope this helps.
