To summarise the main theme of this thread - technique is better than strength for huge drives. And I agree whole heartedly. Look at the pro's in any sport and you'll see that their technique is what gives the majority of the power. I used to be able to kick a football 70m once upon a time, but never did any weights or training. Just kicked a lot of balls.
Look at Tiger Woods at Nike Swing Portrait (http://www.nike.com/nikegolf/swingportrait/). He isn't built like a tank, but he can hit the ball a long long way. Ok, his ability is freakish, but my bet is he doesn't do a lot of weights, just hits a lot of golf balls.
The other thing is that it doesn't matter how far you can hit the bloody thing, if it's in the bush 100m from the hole it's a lot harder to score well, than if it lands on the fairway 120m from the hole. Accuracy. The ability to putt well. Probably more important than the long drive.
Thoughts?
