  • driver, the next step?

i have been using a cobra mspeed offset 12* for quite a while now.
my reason for using this was to cut the slice out of my game.
i have worked really hard on my swing plane and so the slice has gone but now i am tending to pull and hook my drives.is it the closed face that is causing this?
should i now be looking to get a neutral driver?

You'll see less draw side movement with a face that's more open (not necessarily open to spec, but perhaps less closed). Keeping the offset is up to you, but eliminating it will also reduce draw side movement.

In the meantime, you can setup with your driver open to try and fight your draw/hook.

I am in a minority that thinks offset clubs are bad for your swing. Depending on offset ruins the swing,IMHO

Difficult to say Slats. I tend to remember you are hitting a good 3 wood, if that is not offset then you may be right.

How are you hitting long irons, do you get a slice with a 3 iron? if not then I suggest you don't need the offset.

In the mean time work on keeping your arms in the middle of your chest through impact then extending down the target line past impact.

No minority, TID. However, offset is a fabulous tool to help fix a swing that's not working well. I like it for folks that want slice reduction but don't want to take more lessons (ie 'fit my swing').

I have to agree no offense to anyone that uses offset clubs but IMO its better to fix your swing because there must be a small flaw in it that causes a ball to go a certain way. Using an offset club may cure your ball flight, but it doesn't cure your swing.

Does the same logic apply to other "forgiving" properties of clubs, such as cavity backs and large driver heads? Both of these result in better ball flight than you'd get with the same swing using a blade or a small head.

Seems to me the ball flight is all that matters.

It's almost apples and oranges. One provides a solution to distance and trajectory issues, the other directional issues.

But if you're not going to take lessons then you need to get equipment that will help. If that means 3° closed and offset, then so be it.

slater: i personally think the driver itself is not a issue.
i use to use taylor made r7 425 then i change to cobra ofset like you said to eliminate the right side of the fairway,
this month im upgrade to a cobra ld fast stiff 9' ofset cobra...
                    loooong and high.
im myself got some hooks but the right side are gone.

What I meant by what i said was simply that your swing will still have that flaw but the ball will still go straight. It's a cure for your ball flight which will lower your scores but in the long run you have a better chance to get lower scores by taking lessons and fixing your swing.

tried a ton of drivers out callaway, titleist, ping, cleveland etc
settled on a TM superquad stiff shaft 11.5*
i left it set to neutral and the thing is straight as a die hit a couple in the region of 260/270 today which means im hitting PW/9iron approaches instead of 7/8 iron.

                          OMG slates mate,

Sounds like that fitting went very well.

Where did you go for your fitting and how was your results measured mate? You will have to tell me all about it on Sat.

                          Cheers
