  • Turn Pro ?

Hi all , I've been playing golf for around 4 - 5 months now and its taking over my life. I absolutely love the game. I am 27 years old ... I think lol. So is it realistic to think that with hours of practice and tuition, I could become pro in the years to come ?

    cheers

If you want it, you have the talent and the work ethic then you could possibly do it. There have been several similar stories. What is your athletic background. What level are you hoping to reach?

I turned pro after just 3 years of playing and getting down to a scratch handicap. They say you need about 10,000 hours of deep practice to become an expert in anything. How much time could you devote (its about 3 hours a day for 10 years although I did it in half this time)

You would have to devote to becomeing good in all areas - mental, physical, technical, skill, nutritional, experiential etc.

But the mian thing is - as long as you enjoy the process you have succeeded. Life is about enjoying as much as you can. I would rather do something I love and not be successful than to be succesful at something I hate.

    Go for it

      Hi there, thanks for replying.

I used to play football at school but not seriously. Wouldn't say i had talent as such. I just like the game.

I guess I would just like to play to a scratch handicap and become a PGA pro. I'm currently still very much a beginner but can hit some nice shots and I know that with the right tuition I could be a good player, maybe not like the current super stars but a good player.

I just wondered if i'm too old to be starting at 27 really

      thanks

I think you can do it. Is it real football you used to play - or the american handball version? Soccer is a good start to understand spin and body sequence.

How far can you hit at the moment (best shots). What are your scores and bad shots? I dont think it is a problem and most people could get down to the required 4 handicap to turn pga pro - given a little bit of flexibility in the body and some good dynamics. The rest is perseverence and experience.

Can I ask what your motivation is? why do you want to be a pga pro. Is it to teach, or play? What job do you currently have. What were your passions before. Is this just a fad do you think?

          Hi ,

I played Soccer , forgot to mention I play tennis as well. I've always been into sports and would consider myself to be fairly fit. I.e not over weight .

Good shots : Driver - 220 yrds , still struggling a bit with longer irons. Can hit my 4i hybrid just short of 200 yrds. Pw - 120 yrds

My motivation is basically I want to feel I've excelled at something. My friend got me into golf and I absolutely love it. Its definitely not a fad and I know I will be playing for the rest of my life.

So would say that i just want to feel I have achieved something and have seen my potential fulfilled

Sounds likea good goal and a worthy reason. Remember it because golf is full of ups and downs. I have quit golf (jokingly) about 4 times as you can seem to lose it completely some days, then next week you are on top of your form. Tennis is a greta sport t have played, lots of similarities. Try to find a good coach who will let you swing your own way but tweak it here and there to get the ball under control. Some poor teachers will try to get you to swing like a model, be wary of them. They usually have good intentions but have read too many books and dont understand the holistic side of a human body. Work on ball control and all will be well. A good teacher will be able to give you info on ball flight laws, there are many ways to get them done.

Distance sounds reasonable. Check what your clubhead speed is with a driver, it will telll you what your potenitial is for good distance. how often can you practice and play? What job do you have now or are you free?

Ok thank you. Well currently i get to practice around two to three times a week. I work as a self employed plumber so sometimes i get free slots to fit something in. I would prefer to practice on the course but usually im at the range.

How about yourself ? How often do you play/practice ? Did you have many lessons ?

I was largely self taught through books and videos and experiimentation although had maybe one lesson evvery 3 months when i could afford it. Spending time on the range is great and the best way to improve your game.

There is a book out calleed 'dream on', its about a guy who went from 30 handicap to scratch in a year and documented it. Well worth a read if ur going to do the same.

I used to practice maybe 2 times aweek for an hour or so, then one weekends would stay at the course all day and play maybe 3 rounds and practice. Even when i wasnt playing i was constantly checking my swing in the mirror and reading about golf, searcing the internet for tips or working on fitness. A big thing was to play mental rounds of golf with pure visualisation.

I got down to scratch in 3 years. I dont think i could have done it any quicker, but if i had known what i know now then i could have done it a lot easier and stress free. Golf really isnt so hard

                1. find a way to minimise curvature of the ball
                2. find a way to satrt the ball more online
                3. get a GREAT short game
                4. Work on all aspects of the golf game and bring it all together
                5. Find ways to be more automatic on the golf course... wasy to think less and take pressure away. You will be your own worst enemy on the golf course. Most mistake end up being mental, because even technical mistakes originate from the brain

                      Go For It

If you have the desire and the belief in yourself as mentioned there is no reason why you can't achieve this goal. Sounds like you have plenty of natural ability which can take you a long way. Add to that some learning and development in your golf swing plus the mental side of the game and you should be fine.

Keep at it and all the best.
