Golf GPS Devices (again)

I've just re-read some of the previous discussions and I have to say that our arguments were a lot more good humoured back then than they have been of late.

However this time please, can we please not have a good thing / bad thing debate.

I'm interested to hear from those that do use dedicated GPS devices (i.e. not phone applications) which they consider the best, and at what price points.

ive got the skycaddie sg2,5 and wouldnt be without it now
you need to put the work in to know what your iron distances are but once you dial those in then the GPS is a godsend
standing over your shots knowing the exact distance gives you a lot of confidence to just go ahead and hit the shot

I blame the collapse of the global financial market. It's made everyone pissy.

That said, I carry both a laser and an iGolf Neo. The neo is a cheaper unit that delivers yardages. No fancy intelligreen like the skycaddie, but I like it. On the plus side, there's no membership fee. You pay a "one time" thing to extend your warranty for a year and allow unlimited downloads for courses.

I prefer to carry both, especially if I can download an away course ahead of time - because it's great to have the number to the flag, but also to know how much room in front or behind you have (margin for error).

I have the Norbington-Hackett Mk 6. Unfortunately it only gives true distances for hickory shafts and feather gutties. If I would have waited a bit I could have purchased the Mk 7 with the IPod docking bay and MP3 socket. I dont know! buy in haste regret at leisure eh!

Available at: Fortnum & Mason, Harrods, Argos and good Walmart stores. Only 200 guineas.

Genius Brian! I want one!

I tried using a friends GPS gadget and I think because I didnt spend the time setting it up I never really got enough out of it and it seemed to slow me down/be a fiddle.

What's the best easy to use/simple setup bit of kit out there?

most gps devices are updating the distance as they go along so when you get to the ball the distances displayed on the screeen are accurate
got to say it has made my game quicker no umming and erring over which club to hit

But do you find it takes away that important feeling of 'instinct' or 'gut feel'?

NO!
remember all you have is an accurate measurement.
say you have 150 to the middle of the green, on any given day you could have so many ways to play the shot due to the lie, wind direction etc
being confident in club selection allows you to visualise the shot in hand

I used one of the phone type ones and found it helpful on some holes but was always in the habit of pacing from the marker in the middle of the fairway.
again it only gives you the center of the green and you have to work out where the flag is. i still use my own judgement 90% of the time so not really worth me buying one of the top ones on the market.

The Norbington-H is versatile in that it can give distances in Furlongs, Fathoms, Perches or Chains. When attached the Anemometer gives the Beaufort wind force scale and the Windsock indicates prevailing wind direction (Most useful on windy days and no more of that 'time-wasting ' exercise of throwing blades of grass into the air). It weighs in at just a tad over 4 pounds and is small enough to fit snugly into a standard school satchel.

I think I mentioned the new MP3 interface and iPod docking bay on the Mk 7, but I see now a small extra charge can add a pipe holder and cantilever snuff box.

Surely you don't use this in competition, as devices measuring wind or gradient are prohibited.

Well, I wish they'd hurry up. There's a couple guys in my regular foursome that go back and forth about who's number one, and it'd clear up the stink (metaphorically speaking).
