  • hooking irons

Hi guys, i need help. just started hooking my irons. After i hit the ball i notice that my club as closed a little when i am sure it was aimed right at the start of the swing. it seems the club is twisting during my swing. This is not happening with my driver or fairway woods. HELP!!!

    Re: hooking irons

I had the same problem. I was taking some lessons and the guy was recording my swing. One one particular swing, I started fine but on the downswing I was sort of casting the club. I wanted to do what Mike Austin would do but I forgot to rotate my shoulders so a cast came out. Well I really don't know what happened but I think I losed my grip and the club slipped and in one frame my club was open and the next frame it was about 30 degrees closed.

Now I won't know what is happening with your swing but here are some questions I need for you to answer for me:
How are your grips? Are they old because old grips can lead to 3-5 strokes added to your score.
Are the grips too small? If you have a grip that is too small, you will tend to turn over your hands much more than with a grip that fits you.
Do you have a glove? Sweaty hands and old grips are not a good combination. I should know. When I forget my clubs, I will use the school's clubs. They have some of the worst grips. Plus I have sweaty hands and I tend to do bad. Then my coach gets mad at me for not doing good.
Is the clubface at the top of your swing facing the sky? That could be another problem. Try weaking your grip so it would want to produce more of a fade shot.

G2g at school and bell just rung. BRB

      Re: hooking irons

One of the Pga telecasts this year they talked about that a lot of the Pro's, Tiger included have been working having the palm of their lefthand point at the target at the the end of their follow through. This move is supposed to stop the ball from over hooking.

      Might be worth a try.

make sure you are rotating your hips in backswing.I have a tendency to be too quiet with my lower body when im concentrating on a good shoulder turn. When my hips dont rotate i hook it every time.Try it..might be your problem..might not.
