I'm completely new to golf. I've been to the driving range a few times and liked it so I bought a cheap starter set and am planning on hitting the range to develop my skills before playing a game. I figure i'll start off with my irons but I was wondering: do I use the tee? or shoot off the mat? or does it not matter. I dont want to look like a complete fool just a 3/4 fool.

PCS Class 'A' Clubfitter
A new highlight: Golfing the home course on Christmas Day.
I say it too often: If it's golf club shaped, you can play with it.
For the record, I'm a club doctor, not a swing doctor.
Re: Total newb question
A good general rule is use a tee when you're allowed.
For irons, set the top of your tee level with the top of the grass.
For a driver, set the top of the tee 3/4 of the way up your driver face.
