Hey guys as my username states I have only been playing golf for a couple of weeks now. I really enjoy the game but I think that I would like it a lot more if I could just hit the ball cleanly every time. My problems are sometimes the club hits the ground before the ball, and sometimes it strikes the ball cleanly. Was just wondering if there are any tips to keep from doing this. I am a tall golfer about 6'6" and I have +1 clubs. It is really frustrating and I'm afraid that if I can not figure it out I will lose interest in the game.

Re: Beginner Golfer
Hi there,
Try working on your weight shift. You need to get your weight onto your front foot in the downswing, try a small forward bump of the hips followed by good rotation in the downswing. You are probably hanging back on the right foot which makes you hit behind the ball. A good drill to start with is hitting balls with your feet together, this will show you what it is like to stay centered.

Re: Beginner Golfer
Golf is a great game, but it can be frustrating. Weight shifting and timing can be a big reason why you are hitting so far behind the ball. Another thing could be shoes. If you aren't wearing golf shoes your feet might not be providing the stability that you need. I know a lot of beginners who don't wear them, but they really do make a difference.Last edited by LowPost42; 11-13-2011, 11:57 PM.

Re: Beginner Golfer
Brian is absolutely correct. Generally beginners try to HIT the ball with arms. The club head speed is generated by the initial turnning of the hips with the arms following effortlessly and the ball gets in the way of the club head.

I've been playing for 40 years and I can still chunk them.
I think you are probably using the wrists too much but it is possible that your eyes are so far away from the ground that you need a pair of specs.
Try this drill...
