  • Help please? Newbie needs pointers!

Good tidings to all Administrators and Members of this very useful golf forum!

Any pointers for a beginner would be most welcome!

Into my 3rd session at the driving range so far.Have a blister on my left hand where my finger meets with my right hand which has a blister too. Need to loosen my grip as a forum member has replied to a post. Eager to try it tomorrow!

    Warmest Regards to all!

make sure you have good grips (at least not worn) otherwise you may grasp the club too tightly. also check around for a good pga professional, once the basics are ingrained (grip, posture, alighment) the rest will be much easier.

First, congrats on joining the game of golf. It's challenging but lots of fun at the same time. You are correct in assuming you are holding the club shaft too tight. Your grip should be relaxed on the club. There are lots of good videos on YouTube you might look at that illustrate how you should grip the club. I've also got one on my blog: Ladies Golf Tips: GolfGurls.com – The Resource Site for Today's Woman Golfer Even if you are a guy you might find the post helpful. Check it out at: Your Golf Grip Is Your Key To Extra Yardage! – Golf Tips From the Pro – Ladies Golf Tips – GolfGurls.com and the video at: The Correct Grip
                  All the best.

                    Light Grip

Yes I agree with GolfGurl and gripping the golf club lightly. It's a difficult concept to get used to when you first start playing golf but one that's necessary. You should be able to 'waggle' the golf club back and forth with the right kind of pressure on the grip.

I think we've all had blisters when we first started playing golf. Stick with it and they will disappear soon.

                    Enjoy playing this great game!

I'm no expert but I've been through what your going through and would suggest you take in as much knowledge and learnings as possible but at the end of the day do what works for you and learn to 'know' your game - I found if you try to overthink you go downhill!

Re: Help please? Newbie needs pointers!

You might be gripping your clubs too tightly. The tip I like to use for getting the right tension in my grip is using the old 1-10 scale, where 1 is a super light grip and 10 is a super strong 'death-grip'. I'd say the right grip-strength is about a 3-4 on that scale. See if that helps. /Dan
