I am wondering if a Taylormade 580 XD is the right driver for me? I am new to golf but wish I would have picked it up 30 yrs ago (what a game!!) My golf partner just purchased one and he seems to have picked up about 30-40 yds on his drives. I am a high handicapper and don't know if I can justify the price if it won't help me. I currently use a Snake eyes driver but only get about 200 yds on my drives, but they are straight. thank you for your help. Bob

Re: Taylormade 580Xd
Hi Brushbob,
If you are looking at the Taylormade 580xd you should find that you will get a good deal with the arrival of the R7 Series.
I can't comment if you will get anymore distance, there are some many other factors to consider.
However you should get some consistancy with a larger clubhead and this is what we all strive for.
If you are not bothered with Taylormade then try the Cobra 440sz this is a very consistant club with a massive clubhead and very cheap for good quality.
Good Luck
Ian.
p.s get one fitted before you buy as shaft flex is very important for direction.

Re: Taylormade 580Xd
Hi Brushbob,
I agree with Ian - no one can tell you how many extra yards, if any you will add if you switch to a 580XD. The best suggestion is to demo the club to ensure it is something you wish to invest in.

A new highlight: Golfing the home course on Christmas Day.
I say it too often: If it's golf club shaped, you can play with it.
For the record, I'm a club doctor, not a swing doctor.
Re: Taylormade 580Xd
An even better suggestion would be to take the same money and give it to a golf teacher with a PGA designation. You'll get 50 yards out of your driver in a few short lessons - I certainly did.
Then, if you're still not hitting far enough, get the 580

Re: Taylormade 580Xd
There is no doubt that there is no club that can correct a bad swing. A good swing will produce distance and control from almost any club. But, those who are not fortunate enough to have a great swing and do not have the time to practice and play on a regular basis will benefit from a club like the 580XD because of it's forgiving nature.
That in mind, a 3 or 4 lessons will probably cost the same amount as a 580 XD and will benefit every club in your bag.

Bob I started golfing about a year ago, and I am also a high handicapper. In the short time since I have been golfing I have been through 4 drivers – two older used Callaways (the shafts broke) and a Topflight – pretty good and a Titlist – the older one Tiger used before he went to Nike. I presently have a TaylorMade 540xd – and I really like it.
I compared the Titlest head to head with the Taylormade on golf simulator – which measured distance and I repeatedly got me distance – about 20 yards from the TaylorMade – it is forgiving and long – I preferred the 540 over the 580. If you go to ebay (Canada) Golf town sells a lot of demo driver in great shape cheap – you can pick up a used Taylormade XD for under $200.00 Canadian.
Of course there is no substitute for lessons.
If you want more distance I highly recommend the Speed Stick – my swing speed has increased substantially with it.
Finally, you should consider the golf balls you are using. The golf balls should be made for you swing speed – if you get golf balls that are not in synch with your swing speed you may have unnecessary problems.
Best of luck.
James

Re: Taylormade 580Xd
Golf Technology is only as good as the technique applied. I gave a buddy I play with my old 360TI and I bought the newer 580, and he still hit the 360Ti further than I did with my new 580! But, if you are hitting them straight with the Snake Eyes it may be worth the risk!
