  • What clubs should I practice on?

Just wondering...again Being new to golf (2 months), which clubs should I be practicing on? I currently have in my bag, a 3-wood, 3,4,6,8,9 irons, a PW, a SW and of course a putter. Also, even though I've been advised to not purchase any new clubs, would it be wise to spend money on a cheap graphite 1-driver? I get so jealous of the other dudes on the driving range with their big drivers and I'm just standing there with my little old wood. Thanks.

If you want to make swing changes, and work on drills, always use a 7 or 8 iron. If you have a very old driver and want to put a little muney into something, then go to a second hand "trade up" golf shop, and look for something under $100. You can get my favorite driver, the Titelist 975D for about $60 8^)

Thanks again Greg for the help. I'll try and look out for that driver. By the way, what makes that driver your favourite? Because I don't really know what to look for in a driver, being a beginner and all. Thanks again.

It is in my opinion, the best looking club at setup. Its not a jumbo, that makes the ball look like a pea, and it is simply a clasic design...no gimicks or trendy screws to adjust. I hit the thing straight and long...what else do you want? Oh, and it did my taxes this year too!

Hehehehe, sounds like a pretty resourceful club! Well i just checked my local golf store website and a Titleist 975D 8.5deg loft, stiff flex titleist graphite shaft is selling for Australian $113, i think thatz about $55 US (just dividing by 2 so i dun really kno exactly). In any case, is this a good price and is it a good driver to start for a beginner? It looks pretty cool and Tiger Woods used the same model did he?

Might I suggest starting with a driver in the 10.5* and up level, regular flex shaft (unless your controlled SS is > 105).

I'll second Greg and say that practice should be taken with your 7i.

I've stuck to my 7i for the past 2 months. (Also took up golf about 2.5 months ago). During lessons I've already used the putter and mainly the PW for learning pitching and chipping.

In the past 2 weeks, I've moved on to try the whole range of my clubs. What I normally do nowadays when I go to the range is start from my SW and move club by club all the way to my 5i. I think it gives me a good feel of all the irons and the minor adjustments needed to play them, and what kind of distance and consistency I can get with them.
