  • Wedge crazy!!

Why can i hit my wedges further than my 6 iron??

I am a beginner at golf, having only been playing for a few months and I find myself struggling to consistantly hit distances. I am confident with my wedges and believe myself to have soft hands and an ability to feel my distances with them but as soon as i go any higher than a 9 iron my distances start reducing. The last time i went to the range I consistantly hit my PW further than my 6 Iron yet to me my swings for both clubs felt the same... HELP!!

You can post a video on the site for someone here to review and comment on or better yet, book an appointment with your local teaching professional. There will be more than one problem if these are the results you are getting, so be prepared to do lots of work to resolve thses issues.

The reason for inconsistent distance is left wrist breakdown. Be sure that you are transferring your weight to the left side. If you do not your weight is left on the right side and the shaft passes the hands(very bad) and you hit the ball a short distance. It is much easier to hit wedges compared to the longer irons. Do not worry about distance be concerned about impact. The left wrist should be flat or supinated and the right wrist bent. What is your typical ball flight? low, high, left, right, slice, or hook?

How well do you chip the ball where is the ball contacting the face? You can determine this by plcing a peice of tape on your clubface and then chipping balls. The ball will leave an imprint on the tape and will tell you where the ball is contacting the clubface.

I generally have a high ball flight with slight draw, occasionally i have a low slice.

I chip the ball well and using one of those sticker things on the club face have seen that generally i contact the centre of the club face.
