I know it's not as fashionable but I've been using woods instead of hybrids. I have and depending on the situation carry a 1w, 3w, 5w, 7w, 9w, even an 11w which I hit very well. I only ever carry 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, PW, GW, SW in the irons, and I could probably get rid of the 5 and 6. I'd rather swing easy with the wood. The woods have a beautiful trajectory and are handy off the fairway which I can't say for the longer irons. I can use the 9w or the 11w for all sorts of shots, if I swing soft or chip or wherever. I sometimes joke this is my "Perfect" club.
I'd also agree with however said go to Wal-Mart. My woods are different manufacturers but I like my 9 and 11w are "Variant Precision" never seen ads for these but they're really nice and I can smack-em a mile. I've tried other hybrids like the Ben Hogan ones but for $180 I can buy 3 or 4 of the cheapies.
I think the shaft length issue is timing. It takes fractionally more time to swing a longer club. Practice with shorter swings and build up to full swing then work on your speed.
