  • New Into Golf

I'm 14 and I've just got into golf because all me mates have started it. However, I have found that I am absolutely rubbish at the game. I played my local Kendleshire Course twice and got 187 and 159. These are the only times I have ever played proper golf before but it is still a really bad score. I have recently had some lessons but nothing has helped. I'm just not getting any better at all. Can anyone help me?

    Thanks

    Rob,

Golf is not a simple game like baseball or basketball or cricket (thought I'd throw that one in for fun). It is more about you and the enjoyment of man against nature. Your skills do not matter at all as long as you enjoy what you get out of the game.

Your 14. So be patient and play the game without a scorecard. Treat the round as a really large driving range with 18 practice putting greens. Don't hit more then 1 ball though, and play only 1 (maybe 2 shots if you have the time and will not hold anyone up).

Getting lessons is good in that you will hopefully get good advice. Don't be afraid to say, "This is not helping me, is there another way you can show me..". Or "I don't think I understand what that is supposed to feel like" after a set of instructions. The only way you are going to get better is if:
    1) You practice 4-5 times per lesson. 2) Ask questions and provide feedback to the teacher. 3) Don't rush progress.

Ok thanks a lot. I have a lesson tomorrow so I will bear that in mind. I just hate having lessons though because all the other kids my age are way better than me and I am there struggling to hit the ball and I can hear them laughing, its just really annoying.

There are kids that are your age that are way better than me too. Golf isn't something that you can just get instantly better at. You have to work on drills and practice on your weak spots.

As for the kids laughing, ignore them. They have obviously been playing longer than you and I'm quite sure they weren't very good when they first started. Ignoring outside agencies is a great lesson in itself so that you aren't distracted by other things going on around you during your shot.

Well I've been twice recently and got 149 at Kendleshire, and then went to Shortwood which is slightly more difficult and got 136 so I'm definitely getting better. I also got my first birdie on a 320 yard Par 4 at Shortwood so I was well chuffed .
