  • Swing Speed

    Hi all,
I am struggleing most with 2 things

Hitting the ground before the ball and swing speed.

My swing speed it only about 42mph and my pro says we need to get it over 50. I want to hear the "WOOSH"

Also I am still occasionally grounding my club, and it is killing my left hand! OUCH!

    Re: Swing Speed

Well, Debbie, there are two ways to get the radar reading higher. One of them is to swing the right way. The other is to artificially hold your club off, and snap it through impact. I can gain almost 20 MPH that way, but can't hit a ball with it

Work with your coach. S/he knows how to get you over 50, and it's mechanics coupled with flexibility. As for chunking it (hitting the ground before the ball), your coach can tell you why you're doing that, too. I do it for one of two reasons: I slid my hips away from target on the backswing, or I dip my shoulders rather than turn them.

Keep practicing. More important than swing speed (believe it or not), is sweet spot contact on the clubface. You get more distance out of hitting the sweet spot than swing speed will ever bring you.

Debbie. Keep going as it will come! Swing speed isnt everything, a solid swing which hits the centre of the clubface is more important than brute strength

One sure fire way of getting that swing speed up is to remove all tension in your hands and arms. Feel as if you are gripping the club very lightly as you swing. It is a paradox all golfers everntually understood that if you swing the club smoohtly with a light grip it goes faster than if we grip for all we are worth and really lash at it. This is often referred to as swing dont hit

let us know how you get on wont you

strength also has a lot to do with swing speed including hand strength. squeeze a rubber ball or the hand exercisers they sell for under $5.00. Back exercises, situp and pushups are all good. also try swing a heavy club, 2 clubs at a time or add on of the donuts they sell to the shaft.
