  • Range Balls

Simple question, do practice range balls give an accurate picture of club distance ? Just asking because the balls I have used on the range are always pretty nicked up, feel fairly dead and god knows how long they've been in use ?

I think I read somewhere that you can subtract about 10-15% for distance with range balls

As a rule, range balls aren't any good - unless you're at a good range. A good number of ranges have balls that are limited flight - so they'll never tell the distance story. An older gent once told me that you learn your distances on the course. I'm afraid he's right.

            Re: Range Balls

Range balls all differ. at my range we have top flite range balls that are fairly brand new and they actually have similar distance to my shots on the course. The most important thing on the range is you usualy see how far your ball carries and then you dont see the roll. (especially if the grass on your range is long). Therefore it is important to test your distances on the course. The range is simply to make sure you can repeat your swing and become straighter. Usually i do not watch where the ball goes i just judge on how well my swing was technically. If i hit a good shot i usually watch it.

              Re: Range Balls

Depends on the range. I go to a couple simply because they use relatively new balls and clean them. Obviously, if the balls are really old and have been hit thousands of times they won't go as far as new ones will.

Maybe someone should ask a ball manufacturer.

The thing about ranges is their distance signs never seem to be accurate. I swear the 150 yd sign is far closer on the range than on the course.

Sacrifice 1-3 of your own “used” balls. I’m not talking cut or really beat up. But balls that have been used a little and are still very playable.

Hit them at some of your normal targets on your regular range. My range has synthetic greens and several flags, so it’s easy to pick out targets and their distances are at each stall. I also have a laser range finder which REALLY helps.

I know for a fact that MOST of the range balls when I normally play carry 10 yards less than my normal ball, the Maxfi Black Max.

I check this like once a month. I don’t worry about drives. Just the low and mid irons.

                  Re: Range Balls

Depends. There are range balls that are very good quality and I can easily get them out over 300 yards. I can then go to the range a few blocks down and I can't get my driver past 225. The simple fact is that a good range will use a higher quality ball because the members will demand the distances should be similar to the typical ball found on the shelf. Other 'el cheapo' ranges don't care if distances are accurate, only have 250 yards of range, or too damn cheap to buy decent range balls. Therefor they will buy the low quality balls that do not travel as far as the normal store bought ball to save a buck or two.
