  • Ball contact problems.

    Hi everone,

Just returned to the game after 30 years absence and have taken lessons to address grip, posture and swing which appear not too bad now.

The problem I have is when I am using the short irons. I have a habit of dipping my knees which results in me punching down on the ball and taking a good size divot. Don't get me wrong, the ball lifts well and I get the distance I want. On the other hand, when I am using the long irons I don't get the temptation to dip my knees and results in poor contact with the ball.

My question is whether I should be trying to punch down on the ball on the forward swing in every case, or should the swing itself, if correct, lift the ball by itself.

    Thanks

Don't ever try to lift the ball in the air. There's a reason why the clubs have different lofts. Just take your normal smooth swing and let the clubs do the work. With longer irons, your swing will naturally become shallower, so you are not going to notice such a large divot as you would with your shorter irons. Hope this answered your question

Sorry for delay in getting back, Broadband problems.,

Thanks for the advice. Went out yesterday and concentrated on my swing and realised that my legs were turning too much. Made more of an effort to swing from hips up, and this made such a difference. Went out for a round today and now hitting all irons consistently. Thanks again.
