  • Different Grip

I've been playing golf for 12 months and seem to be stuck around the mid 90's..

My grip is different to everyone i know as i hold my club with right hand at the top and left at the bottom, ( I am right handed). I seem to slice the ball quite often especially long irons and driver,

Is this a problem with my grip or something else??

I've tried holding club differently but it doesn't feel comfortable.

    Can anybody help??

    hi scotty
think your grip is called playing cack-handed
ive read it works for some people but dont think most would recommend it!
check the tips on here how to grip properly and stick with it
i started playing using baseball grip and switched to interlocking at first it was uncomfortable and even bruised left hand but it soon became second nature!
a little tip practise your new grip 10mins a day when not playing and you will feel more comfortable a lot quicker
    hope this helps!

      Thanks for the advice slats.

I will definitly try and change my grip, it doesn't feel right at the minute but hopefully with perseverance i can adapt.

Do you think changing my grip will stop me slicing and increase distance?

        hi scotty
a proper grip is one of the most important fundamentals.
stick with a proper grip it will come right in the end.
there are lots of reasons for the slice and a bad grip is certainly one of them a correct grip coupled with correct ball position, stance, posture and obviously swing will increase distance and improve accuracy.
get the grip sorted and you are then on the right track

You will absolutely get more distance if you switch from cross-handed grip. It's very hard to get a lot of leverage using the cross-handed grip.

            Re: Different Grip

I've been playing (properly) for ten years. When I first picked up a club it just felt very un-natural to hold it any other way than cack-handed - and I still play cack-handed.

I find it gives me no dis-advantage in distance - I can hit the ball straight and far. I do find that I get less elevation on the ball than most, which may be due to a more closed club face at impact (due to the cack-handedness).

I've often thought about changing - mostly due to comments from other golfers (you can't play like that!.... you should fix that grip etc...) but it suits me, I'm comfortable with it, and it works.

              Guys,

Truth be told, You will never reach Your potential without the proper grip for You. A Proper Grip will ALWAYS feel weird and uncomfortable at first till You stick to it and sooner than later it will feel right. The grip is the #1 Fundamental of golf. It's indespensible.
