It was strickly the beauty of the courses that got me wanting to play.Now 25 years later..my wife and i have played some magnificent golf courses.Because of golf we have enjoyed life a lot more and have a lot more memories to share.What a great game.Ya'll playin' tomorrow?David

Well if you guys have ever gone to Academy Outdoor store place (I forget =) ) they have a small area for putting. Ever since I was like 3 I would get shoes there then I would run over to the practice green and I would put with the clubs there. I had no idea what I was doing but I wanted to get the ball in the hole. My dad kept asking me if I wanted to play golf and ikept saying no. Well 9 years later when I was in 7th grade, I joined the golf team. I had no idea it was that hard. I felt like quitting and then I heard that there are so many scholarships being not used in golf just because kids think it's too easy. Well I kept practicing and now I was in the high school varsity team as a freshman and I am going to be in it again as a sophomore next year. The awesome thing now is that I hit farther than everyone else on my team =) .

my husband playes golf for year. now I thought it's enough spending my weekends alone and started to play golf myself! never thought I could have that much fun playing golf. always thought it's kind of ... well, boring ... but hey, now that I'm in on it I really enjoy it!

Hi guys,
I had always shunned golf also. Thinking it was boring and only for old men and snooty rich guys trying to get away from their wives. (now I play and realized only part of that was true!!) I began playing disc golf about 8 years ago. I learned the game and always had a great time. I really thought I had really grasped the rules and methods. Last summer I got invited to a golf outing with the in- law's family for their family reunion. So my brother-in-law told me that he wanted to take me to the driving range and shag a couple buckets of balls. I was quicky pointed out my flaws in my swing. I strived to correct them. Well nevertheless our outing was rained out. I was very let down. Now I've played all the local courses and feel I have the game at least partially figured out. I absolutely am obsessed with golf my wife will constantly be annoyed with my golf talk but I guess that's why I leave her at home!!! Great question!! Thanks for letting me share my story!

Well when I was much younger, I wanted to do something really stupid one day,so I bought some golf clubs. I wanted to add something to my life, that would always cause me grief, agony, joy, and humble me, all at the same time. I wanted something I could spend many thousands of dollars, and hours on, through out a devoted career, trying to achieve the impossible.

Actually I took the game up at the urging of some family, and friends at a young age. I like the idea of being out of doors, in a relaxed state. I especially liked the mental, and physical challenges the game provided. I never beat the game of golf, but I came close to breaking even with the total game quite a few times. It was, and still is my way of "recharging". Not much feels better than a well struct ball that actually does what I planned for it to do. It still happens occasionally.

I used to be a sailor and spent all my summers on the water. Once was invited to play golf at a business fundraiser. Played with three other non players. We were absolutely the worst bunch out on the course and came in dead last. But I loved it. A few years later I moved and had to let go of the sailboat. Took up golf for the fun and networking and have enjoyed it ever since. Still have a lot to learn!

for me, it is not just a game, firstly it is for work, but i really love it. it is a pratice of overcoming yourself

Being around a golf club from a very young age as my father is also a PGA Professional. It was inevitable I guess - although unlike most now days I was not pushed into it I just enjoyed it and was lucky enough to be in a position to be able to play.

Seve! Inspired by the '84 Open, myself and a friend cycled to the nearest muni and hired some clubs. (My friend being a lefty was not impressed by the limited amount of clubs he was given.LOL!)
I had, had a dalliance with the game a few years previous but my terrible play didn't endear me so I stopped.
Inspired by Seve I hit my opening drive straight down the middle and the rest is history.
I often wonder if I hadn't hit this shot would I have just packed up and how would my life be different!

P.S. My friend gave up on the game. Disgusted by the availability of left-handed merchandise at the time!!!

I started as a defiant act to my father. He loved golf, but family life deteriorated his swing to the point of hate for the game. He hid the clubs in the basement hopefully never to be found. As a boy, Dad taught me tennis, with no interest in showing me the clubs. I played all the way up to college tennis with a scholarship, but I was getting slightly burned out. I found the clubs on a break staying with the parents back at the house, found them and snuck them back. I always wanted to try golf and here was my chance...away from the scorns and reticule. It took about 4 months to where I could actually hit them straight, another year to make me quit the tennis team and get a job selling pizzas to pay for range/green fees, and another year to return home with the clubs admitting my transgressions and ask for forgiveness. Its been about 25 years now, and Dad is playing again in retirement and is just now back to playing what he considers acceptable golf. I always wonder what it would have been like if I never snuck the clubs out that day.

Why did I start palying the wonderful game...

Severiano Ballesteros got me hooked on golf. I was watching him hit shots at the practice day during Ryder Cup at the Belfry where we had the 1st european victory in 1985 is that really 25yrs ago now!!. Well Seve was playing fantastic golf bac then, and the one shot which has always stuck in my is this.

I observed Seve intimate to his Caddy that he wanted to curve the ball low and to the right to get around a corner. I watched Seve strike the ball which didnt seem to go more than 20ft in the air and followed its intended line perfectly. I was from then on mesmerised and thought Ill have a go at that, having not played before, did I have a shock I dont think I even got the ball of the ground back then, let alone emulate the great mans shot.
Although, I have improved a little lol
And you know what, I hadnt even got a clue back then what a great Golfer this man was, and a great Ambassador for the game severiano ballesteros.

I have always been involved in sport, never excelled at any just enjoyed playing, living near St Andrews in Scotland I was surrounded by Golf and my Dad played so it just seemed like an obvious progression and now I don't see it as a sport but as a part of my life (bit sad I know!)

A good friend of mine during my high school years my always playing golf on the weekends when I wanted to hang out. I decided to see what the fuss was all about and joined him one Sunday and have never looked back.

Been playing if for 20 years since!

I'm 28, and until a year ago the idea of playing golf never appealed to me at all. My brother-in-law would always badger me about taking it up, and I'd always wonder what's so appealing about gettting up in the early hours of a sunday morning to spend 4 hours walking about a field in the freezing cold.

My father-in-law broke his back, so I lent his clubs one day and went for a try at a small par 3 practice course. I went back again the folowing week and within a month I had my own shiny new clubs.

My first full round at a proper course (Matfen Hall, Northumberland) was great. My brother-in-law took me up and I thouroughly enjoyed it. A year on and I'm still thrashing around the courses every other week, and planning on having lessons in the spring.
