Making Your Own Putter

Hello everybody i am wondering is making myself my own putter worth it or should i just buy another one. Now i know you are all probably thinking how the hell does a 13 year old make his own putter?? Well, the answer to that is i work in a club fitting shop and get to fit clubs..the whole works along with my good friend Bud Clayton best damn club fitter every IMO.

You can build one just to build it, or build one to fit.

I'll wager the one built to fit is better than the one you just buy. Get Bud to fit you.

Wow - that's a different ball of wax.

Obviously the fast and easy route is to secure a prefab head. However, if you're the least bit interested in clubhead design, then it would be way cooler to mill/forge/cast your own.

You can make your own putter anytime. I have made many over the years. BUT you can’t use it in any competition because it must be passed by the R&A or USGA officials.

It must be tested by them to approve it ok.

Equipment Submissions
In order for The R&A to render a formal ruling on any item of golf equipment (including clubs, gloves, tees and electronic devices), a sample needs to be submitted for examination. The sample should be accompanied by any necessary explanations regarding the intended method of use, the 'intent' of the design and any claims that may be made in the marketing of the club or device

In the USGA, it's assumed conforming until it's listed as not.

I would assume that is the same here in the UK (R&A) but you can't use it until it has been approved by the above body and that goes for the US as well!

Until it is tested would you take a chance and use it! I don’t think so. Would be like using GPS without a local rule in competition lol…

BTW if you are making one putter, then you best make two because the test putter you will be sending to be passed/rejected by your governing body will not be returned.
