That is the one. Where did you get it? What do you think about it? I'm so glad we could get it off Golf Link so others can see it.

In looking back at your previous post you asked about the ball landing with very little run. Well that has two components to it. One is the trajectory and the other is the spin on the ball. I am doing much better on trajectory as in a high arc and softer landing but not so well on spin. I just don't get spin. It would seem that I would strike the ball by accident the correct way and get some good backspin occasionally. I get spin, but not very much. The best I do is just a short hop forward or pretty much spin in place. What I see with a good iron shot is the ball about 4 to 12 inches from the ball mark.

I got the video from youtube but they seam to have taken it down now

Most of the time I am getting some good height to the ball but the spin component is missing. So how the heck to you get the ball to check? From what I remember of Stan's book he seamed to imply that it was automatic for a pitch shot. If so then I am missing something, if not, I am also missing something

Any ideas?

A flop shot will land steeply with little spin and either stop dead or just take a bounce if the green is hard.

If you want a shot that lands with spin then the ball has to be compressed, the hands must lead the clubface and you must strike the ball firmly then take a divot. The ball will fly lower with more spin, land check then roll on. The amount of roll will depend on the loft, more loft less roll.

So if I understand properly, I am not really looking to use a pitch shot 25 meters out from the pin or less, it should always be a flop shot if I am wanting almost no roll.

If so do you know any drills to practice?

That's right, if hitting over a bunker to the green or up onto a raised green you normally want the ball to take a high flight and stop dead, the flop is the shot for this.

It is raining here at the moment but as soon as it clears I'll be down at the chipping green for practice. I'll post again after that. I am sure I'll have questions.

Anyway I got to the driving range today and I got to try something I read last night. According to Stan Utley, if the grip on the leading hand is too strong you will not be able to get a high, soft landing shot. Well I tried shifting my hand a bit and I couldn't believe it, the ball was going consistently higher and landing softer. The only thing I am not sure about is wether this translates onto the greens. I'll find out as soon as it stops raining.

Please give it a go and report back, I'd like to hear your thoughts. I am not sure how much different the effect is when hitting off mats as opposed to grass. I can't wait to try it on a course.
