What wedges

Hello People,

I am curious as to what wedges people carry. I currently have a PW, 52 & 58 degree wedges.

I am thinking I could maybe use a higher degree wedge maybe 60 or above as I am often using my 58 and having to open face even more for some shots as my home course has lots of small elevated greens (that I rarely hit on approach shot).

If I am opening the 58 degree face to get even floppier shots its not a guaranteed outcome for me as sometimes I thin them, I know this is my poor technique, but I was wonder if I would be better with a more lofted wedge and using a normal chip.

Any thoughts, recommendations?

Anyone carry a wedge they can not live without?

It would also be nice to stop the ball dead as well, I cant seem to achieve this with my ping tour wedges.

Hi Spiffo,

I carry 4 wedges, they are Mizuno MP R type.

Pitching wedge
52 deg gap wedge
56 deg Sand wedge
60 deg Lob wedge

I find this a good mix that allows me to manage just about all eventualities inside 120 yards.

You may be having problems hitting flop shots with your 58 due to amount of bounce it has, is it a sand wedge? The bounce will make it difficult to slide the face under the ball. You should maybe try a 60 or 62 with little bounce.

There will not be any problem with your ping wedges, they are good clubs. A nice high lob shot will stop up if dropping straight down.

Thanks for your reply Brian.

Im not sure if my 58 degree is a sand wedge. I do use it as a sand wedge, not sure of its bounce also.

My course tends to be soft, so Im not sure whether that means I need a low or high bounce wedge.

Thanks for that rotator. Very useful and now I understand the bounce. More bounce for soft lies and less for hard lies.

I was actually looking at vokey wedges online last night trying to justify the cost to myself.

They are a thing of beauty, aren't they. They can get you hooked, if you should hold them. Online, you can't really get the sense of how they could inspire you to use them as a surgeon's tool in your hands. Clean and sleek, balanced. Ah, the cost.

I had a couple of Vokey wedges some time ago and they were nice tools. I now have a complete set of Mizuno irons and just love my MP R black nickel wedges, they have a special ground sole that allows for many combinations of shot in difficult lies.

One of the guys I play with swears by the MP R wedges as well and says he find them more forgiving than the titliest vokey he had.

I might get a wee trial run with both before I jump in and buy somit.

I carry a 48, 56 and 60. The 60 has part of the bounce ground off and the 56 is extended a half inch.

Im only a beginner but have the same as Brian a set of 52,56,60 Mizuno MP R Black Ni. They are awesome the SW that came with my cavity back set was huge and i couldnt get on with it changed to the MPR had 2 chip ins in the last 4 rounds with them they just feel so good.

i carry 4 wedges. 47 PW, 52, 56 & 60
My specalty wedges are Taylormade TP Rac Satin forged wedges.

getting the ball to spin depends a lot on the ball your using and greens your hitting into. but getting it to check and stop within 1m would be acceptable in anyones game.

Hi Guys, a well timed subject for me as I have recently discovered that I am always struggling with my wedges.So far I had been persevering with the standard wedges in my powerbuilt kit,plus a 60 degree utility wedge.I am a bit of a horder of all things golf so in amongst the mess I discovered a 52 degree Macgregor blade gap wedge and a heavy Billy Rodgers blade sand wedge. I took them out this morning and Wow. The gap wedge I have found to be great 80 mtres out to 10 metres depending on wether I use a full stroke or choke it or finesse it. The bounce is such that it is stillgood for the short stuff as well as hard pan. So I now use the powerbilt pitching wedge 48 degrees,the52degees macgregor, and the sand wedge of unknown angle. this now has me confidently covered.I got rid of the 60 as just to hard for me to use, it was one of those called an alien and had to much bounce and was too unpredictable. I think it is all about experimenting untill you find what works for you.

when i purchased the wedges i wanted the 52 to fill in the gab 115m for me. but do you think i can hit it... got no idea why i can't as it's teh same breed as the 60 and 56.

i'm not finding i can usually fill in the gap and get my SW to 110m on a big hit and use my PW from 110 - 130m.

carry 48, 54 and 60 titleist wedges and have recently dropped 3 iron to accomodate a 64 degree. When the winter comes will probably return the 3 to duty. i would be very careful putting a big hit on a SW unless you can put it beyond your target. nothing worse that pitching it by the hole and having it suck back outside the comfort zone
