I am really struggling with purchasing new wedges. I currently have a set of Taylor Made RAC OS irons with stiff graphite shafts, built with 1 degree extra upright lie and 1/2" longer. I'm just shy of 6' 3". The set has a 45/5.5 (loft/bounce) PW and a 50/10 SW.
I'm about a 12-15 handicapper who plays a slight fade (I come over the top). I'm really struggling with consistency from the 110 yards or less distance because I use only the 45/5.5 PW.
I was thinking about ordering the Taylor Made Black Wedges, but have too many options that are confusing me. Here are some options I was looking at:
1. I can order a Taylor Made RAC OS "A-wedge" that is 50/5.5 to exactly match my set of irons. I would then keep the current sand wedge and also order the RAC Black 60/7 wedge. This would make all of my irons/wedges an exact set with the exception of the 60/7 lob wedge and I'd have a 5 degree gap (45, 50, 55, 60) with all of my wedges. However, I've heard that it is better for the wedges NOT to match the set of irons to produce a different feel with the wedge shots. Not sure why, but that is what one of the salesmen told me.
2. Replace my SW and order a full set of RAC Black (52/8, 56/12, and 60/7).
3. Keep the current SW and order the Black Wedges 52/8 and 60/7.
Most of my confusion is with the middle club. I struggle with a lot of bounce from a fairway lie so I don't use my SW too much from the fairway because I'm very inconsistent with distance. But if I got the 56/12, this has more bounce and would probably be worse. Either way, with any of the options, I would seldom use the 56/12 Black Wedge or the 55/10 SW from a tight fairway. Here are my questions that I hope you can help with.
1. Which option do you recommend? Is it better to have a matching set (Option 1) or a matching wedge set (Option 2).
2. If I go with option 3, is it difficult to have a different mid wedge (the SW would be my current RAC OS but the 52 and 60 would be the Black Wedges).
3. Should I order the wedges 1/2" longer like my other irons or will the shorter/standard set be better?
I've been looking for over a week and just can't seem to come up with a strong recommendation. Any help, advice and guidance you can provide will be GREATLY appreciated.
