  • Best Chipping Tips

    I was wondering what your best golf chipping tips are for around the greens.

    Mine are the following:

    * Have most of your weight on your left side (right hander)
    * Narrower stance
    * Shaft angled towards your target
    * Hands kept in front of the golf ball right throughout the stroke
    * Ensure you strike the ball with a descending blow

    I use anything from a 8 iron to a sand wedge depending on how far to the pin I am and the slopes of the green. But the club you choose is quite often a very personal thing.

    Re: Best Chipping Tips

    My most frustrating chipping mistake is turning my head to watch the chip too early and consequently making poor contact. To prevent my doing this I consciously try to make sure I see the spot on the ground under where the ball lay before I look up -- same as when putting.

    Also, I think it is important to rehearse my chipping stroke and commit to the backstroke necessary for the distance and trajectory, and then make that same stroke with no last moment or subconscious adjustments.

      Good points made here.

      I think it is important to focus on your ball landing point, if you have chosen the club that will release the right distance then this must be your target and not the pin.

        To add to the above good points:

        1) don't always automatically grab the Pitching Wedge when you chip, you can chip with the 7iron , 6iron etc

        2) If I had a choice between a SW and minimal release versus using a 7 iron with more roll, I would go for the latter.

        3) i like to go with the swing thought of making sure I contact the ball first( to avoid hitting it fat or fluffing it)
