  • What is your Short Game Practice Routine?

    Hi Guys

Just curious what your short game practice routine is?

For me I generally do these few things:

    1) 60 metres out- use my 60 degree Lob wedge, normal lob shot.

    2) 60 metres out- use my PW- and do a 8 o'clock to 4 o'clock small pitch onto the green

    3) 30 metres out- use my lob wedge to do small chip bump and run to release off the green, rolling onto the green

    4) just off the green and do a "chip putt" with a 8 iron , where i aim at a spot on the green

any suggestions on what else i could do?

    thanks Mahbo

    Routine

I work on chipping from mostly closer distances around the green because I find that I'm in that position more likely on the golf course if I have missed the green.

I also work on putting from 1 foot through to 30 foot on different angles and slopes.

One short game drill that I like is what I call "make what you leave". I chip ten balls, then putt out the ten balls. I then repeat from another location/distance. I'll typically do this for about half an hour during a practice session. This isn't the only chipping/putting drill I do but it is one I like a lot.

I like this "make what you leave" drill because it makes one focus on making a good chip each time. You are going to have to make the putt too just like on the course.

thanks for that Krudler Ace. Up until now, I have always by passed the putting green after a practice session. Gotta change that attitude for 2011!

44% of your game is putting!

Putiing comprises direction, distance, green reading and pressure. Any putting practice should comprise all of these elements.

Simulate real game situations as much as possible in your practice.

To me, short game means anything less than a full swing golf shot, so pitching, chipping, sand play and putting.

I don't have any single short game practice routine. I like to mix it up and not practice the same way all the time. One of my favourites is what I call "putt what you leave". I will chip balls onto a practice green and then putt out every ball.

+1 for "putt what you leave." This will tell you what you will face on the course, and will give you an idea of what kind of putts to practice if you want to get up and down. Three foot, six foot, ten foot putts; however close you happen to get it to the hole with your wedges.
