Well i was trying my new wedge today i and cant seem to hit it right? i think its my stance, and i dont know how big my swing should be because its chipping around the greens, so if you can help please do
The stance when you are chipping is quite individual DNA
Some people like to stand quite open to the ball with a narrow stance (me) and some people leave it as a normal stance. Its all down to feel at the end of the day. Have a bit of an experiment with different styles and see what you feel most comfy with.
You're probably moving your lower body. Almost always when students comes to me and say they hate this wedge, it's a load of **** and a waste of money - if they don't dig it into the ground then they thin it over the back into the water.
Okay ... do this 'swing' for shots of like 20 yards and less around the green.
Setup nice and close to the ball. Remember, you're closer and the club is a short club so you need to lower your body. You can't stand up on it like a normal wedge shot. Put some more flex in the knees, narrow your stance and turn your feet towards the target a bit. Push at least 2/3rd of your weight onto your left side.
Cool?
Now, swing back as far as you need to keeping your lower half (legs and knees) still and hit throughkeeping your wrists firm. When I say hit through I don't mean airey-fairy, I mean accelerate through and dont stop until the club has reached your left hip then you can slow down.
On chip shots there is no wrist cock or opening/closing the clubface unless you need to get the ball up quickly (more than the 60* that you will get anyway).
Go and practice it. Lower your body, weight forward, swing with firm wrists and no lower half.
Problem solved .
By the way: you can use this 'swing' with any club you want to pitch or chip with. It's also a great shot for hitting a recovery shot under the trees.
Sorry, I missed the part about how hard to hit it.
With a LW, you need to hit about 75% of the way to the flag. With a SW, about 2/3rds of the way...
How far to swing the club is very difficult to answer. Everyone is different and you'll have to practice and practice until you get a feel for various distances.
So my arms stay like stiff, and i accelerate through the ball and getting it up the to the hole? and should my hands be before the ball before i hit it?
Just to re-emphasis one point made by Graham that I find is the key for good contact on short chip shots. Put 2/3rds of your weight on the left side and keep it there throughout the shot. You don't need weight transfer on these shots as you are only looking to hit the ball a short distance. Keeping your weight on one side prevents any swaying of the body and inconsistent contact.
