The 14th on the course I play is a testing Par 4. It's uphill all the way and generally against a stiff breeze. It's a sharp dogleg to the left so you need to aggressively cut the corner with a good drive unless you want a long iron or fairway wood as the 2nd shot.
I hit a great drive there on Saturday, long and perfectly on line leaving me about 150 yards out from the middle of the fairway. I hit a good 6-iron with the headwind exaggerating the draw. It landed pin high but just off the edge of the green about 20 ft from the hole.
This left a tricky putt as the green slopes sharply from back to front with the wind helping the ball down the slope. I didn't hit a great first putt, I underestimated the break and the ball past the underside of the hole. To my dismay it then proceeded to accelerate down the slope and off the front of the green leaving me about 15 ft back to the hole, but at least uphill.
I hit an aggressive second putt but it stopped about a foot short of the hole and then started to roll back down the slope again. Fortunately it came to rest after about 6 ft on a little tuft of grass. I quickly marked it!
The third putt I hit about an inch past the hole on the right but the wind and the slope causes it to teeter on the edge before dropping into the hole. Phew!
In the end I was happy to make bogey but it just made me think whether putting on that hole, with that flag position was just too difficult. From my point of view, on an uphill putt the ball shouldn't run back towards your feet if you leave it a little short, leave that for the Crazy Golf at the Fun Fair.
I'd be interested to hear what you all think.
