How useful this club is it??

    Re: 52º sandwedge

Quite, if you have a yardage gap between your PW and SW.

FWIW, a 52* is often referred to as either an approach or gap wedge.

Yeah..........it's a gap wedge and I agree with lowpost on this, If you have a yardage gap between your pitch and sand then go for it. You may also find that you like it around the green. Who knows?

        Re: 52º sandwedge

I have had both 52 and 53 degree gap wedges from a variety of manufacturers. I have found that the Titleist Vokeys that I have had performed rather well. Some of the other manufacturers I have not been pleased with.

I am currently trying a Mizuno 51 gap wedge with a raw finish and have not hit a shot with it as of yet. As the lofts with the PW are getting stronger, generally around 46 to 57 degrees and the standard sand wedge being 56 degrees, the loft gap is too great. I find that I hit more shots between the 80 - 115 yard range that the gap wedge fills very nicely. My wedge arsenal is PW, AW and LW being 47 degree loft, 51 degree and 58 degree. I might bend my gap wedge to 52 degree if need be (as I have my own loft and lie machine).

Vokeys are the best (damn them!!!) I use Mizuno Black Ox's and they are good but lack the versatility of the Vokeys due to their heavy soles, they are better as feel wedges rather than as full shot wedges whereas the Vokeys do it all (really wishing I hadn't sold my 50° 256.08 Vokey Black Nickel!!!).

Gap wedges are ideal if you hit your pitching wedge over 120 yards. But if you dont you might be better investing in a utility wood instead.

I have to agree with Mizunoman, especially regarding how far a person hits a PW. I hit mine 125 yards on average, about 136 yards in Colorado. I do not need too much versatility with the gap wedge as I merely want a wedge that will be good from the fairway/rough and the sand. I am not intending to get to cute with the gap wedge. My 58 degree lob (with modifications) is my versatile club and does a lot of my exotic shots.

I agree with the guys above its all about distances you hit....not the club.

I don't carry a standard 56 degree sand wedge, all my irons are 1degree stronger.....therefore my pitching wedge is 45 degrees, so I carry a 52 degree and a 58 degree, which is fine for me.

If your interested I carry the Callaway rusty wedges for all three.

              Hope this helps

              Ian.

Yeah the gap wedge is a great tool to have in your bag. If you're looking for a wedge that is a little less expensive than the vokey's, but performs as well if not better, the cleveland TA 900 series is great. I have the RTG (raw tour grind) in 52, 56, and 60, and i'm knocking down more pins anywhere inside 115 yards than I ever have. These are great for full shots, pitches, chipping around the green, whatever. I would suggest getting the low bounce version if you play fairways that are a bit harder than usual.
