  • SHort Chip Spin!

    Hey all!

I was just wonderin, how can you get some spin into a short chip to slow it down, so it bounces spins and slows down and rolls a little more? and how can you make it bounce un spin ouf of a bunker? as this will make my putts abit shorter

First, play a soft cover ball. Then be sure your clubface is clean..especially the grooves.

As for the stroke. You have to play it in the back slightly...not a lot, just about 1 or 2 ball widths. Normal chip shots have it on the back foot, but if you want it to stop sooner, play it a littel more forward from that.

Sand shots with lots of spin that stop need you to hit very very very close to the ball but not "on" that ball. Normal sand shots like to be hit about 2 inches behind the ball. That will be a very safe out with some run. But if you want spin, ease up on the power a little, and almost pick it.

The harder you hit a shot from the bunker the more spin you will get. Just open or close the face to adjust the distance. As for short chips you shouldnt try and spin them, heres a tip from Nick Faldo I heard just the other day:

Always aim to land a chip a yard on the green and let it run to the hole this has two advantages, rarely will you overcook it and run miles past secondly it will usually show you the run of the green and help with the putt.

To get into the habit take a few balls and every club from SW down to maybe the 7 iron and stick a tee peg in the green a yard on. Now hit some balls landing around the peg and see how far each one runs. This will tell you what club runs what distance, then you can take that out on the course.

I started doing this after I saw it and damned if it doesnt work really well!!!

Spinning the ball is great for show but very few of the pros seem to do it habitually with chips. It makes them very hard to control.
