Wedges and distance?

On average, what are you hitting your wedges?

I hit my 8 at about 150, PW 125 or so.

Late last year I went with 52, 56 and 60 wedge, but seemed to struggle around the 105 to 110 range. Should I be able to get the 52 over a 100 yrd's?

I'm using the Pure Spins ( I know they arn't that great ). Just wondering if I need to try a different wedges?

i hit my 8 160 yards, my pw 140 my 56 118, my 60 about 95.

I would suggest getting some vokey wedges, or even the original nike forged wedges are going very cheap on ebay right now and are pretty good as well.

i agree....you can also get some distance by pressing and hitting down more on the ball

i forgot to add, those distances don't seem that bad to me. a 52 might not go over 100. When i had one it only went 120, which is the same as my sand wedge. It pretty much depends on the player.

Wedges are about accuracy and control dont worry if you dont hit them as far as a corrsponding iron, many of them have heavier soles that add height and spin at the expense of distance. You need to find out what wedge covers the distance you have trouble with.

Cleveland are still the best, although I think you do the Pure Spin's a disservice, I think they are pretty decent clubs. Cleveland does a range of wedges from 47-64 degrees you will find one amongst that lot that serves the purpose, I would recommend the trusty rusty's especially.

Why are clubs that rust good. Does the rust affect how your shots play?

AT ONE POINT the thought was that as the finish on a club wore off, it opened up the grooves, providing more spin.

Nowadays this is a moot point, as grooves are machined to their limits already.

I've got some Maltby M Series Black Ion wedges (will rust) - great, but mostly, I think, due to the Rifle Spinner shafts in them.

I'm the shortest hitter on tour - my PW is 110, GW 95, SW 75, LW 50.

I hit my PW about 150 and my SW(cheap club, first to be replaced soon) about 105. One of the things I'm working on is try to stay short of parallel with my clubs to improve accuracy. I've been trying to take 3/4 9 irons where I would be taking PW normally and I think it will improve my accuracy. Unfortunately the wind has been horrendous about every time I've gone out so it's really tough to tell how it's working so far.

I hit PW 145, 56* SW 125 and 60* LW 95. I have to say, I love my Cleveland 588's.

Mizu, I wasn't trying to degrade the Pure Spins. They really were my first set of decent wedges and have done me ok so far, just wondering why I seemed to struggle to get my 52 over a 100 yrds. Maybe I'll try hitting the Clevelands and see how much a difference they might make.

Anyway's I'm gonna work hard this year with the my wedges and see how thing's change score wise. Again Thx..

When a wedge rusts it creates more friction when the ball contacts the face. This generates more spin.

About the distance you hit your wedges. Distance is controlled by length of backswing, and tempo. the slower you swing the less farther the ball will go.
The faster you swing the farther the ball will go. Spin is generated by pinching the ball against the turf. You have to hit the ball first and then the Earth.

Like Gord, I use the Cleveland 588 SW and LW and I love them. Great feel and touch so I can regulate the distance well and get a bit cute with them from tricky situations; they definitely save me at least two shots a round. They don't seem to hit the ball as long as the Hogan Edge CFTs that came as part of a set but that really doesn't matter now I've adjusted to them, it's the accuracy that counts. In time I'll probably buy the PW as well as when I'm just out of range with the SW the Hogan wedge is a bit too hot for good distance control.

if you have a par 3 course near you, i would suggest playing a few rounds there. this is the best way i know of to know exactly how far you hit each wedge
