    Re: lobbing vs chipping

Well, I've come to the conclusion that the "build lots of shots" guys are right. I practiced with balls scattered all around the green, (instead of repeated shots from same spot), and quickly found out that a variety is absolutely necessary. Right away you find that lies make lobs impractical, and if there is little green to work with (and some distance), a firm chip with the lob wedge is the only thing that works. So, yes, practice everything, and build as many shots as possible. Once that has come along, I think I'll find myself "putting when possible, then chipping, then lobbing" - the recommendation I least agreed with at first.....

    thnx, guys. I learned something....

      Yggdrasil,

Play whichever club you feel confident using.

The proviso being the course on which you're playing. Course conditions can change very quickly at this time of year. Here, in the south of England, a few warm days and drying winds have made the greens a lot firmer than they were a week ago. This, also, means having to play off tighter lies around the green.

The course on which I play has small greens; virtually all of them have trouble behind. The ability to play the bump and run shot is essential. Launching a LW in from 50 yds, at the moment, is not a good idea.
