  • Consistent pitches

I am having problems with my pitches from say 100 yards and in. I have lost all concept of what I am doing and as such hit all types of shots: Thins, fat shots etc. I seem to be scared of attacking the ball and find myself either deccelerating or flick at the ball. Does anyone have any good tips or drills to promote a more consistant strike and also on distance control. I carry a Mizuno MX23 PW, Vokey 54 degree and CG10 60 degree lob wedge.

    Re: Consistent pitches

Funny you should mention this, as I have spent my day re-reading Dave Pelz: My Short Game Bible.

There are 2 things to focus on: Ball position and swing length.

First, ball position. Play the ball in the middle of your stance (or further back). By middle of your stance, I mean relative to your heels, not your toes.

Do NOT play the ball more than 1/2" ahead of center. The more forward you play your ball, the more 'out of position' you'll have to be to hit it.

Second, think short-to-long for your swing. You can't decelerate with a short backswing.

The thing to keep in mind (and Dave alludes to this) is that he worked for NASA.

Therefore, this book pretty much ignores feel. If you're a logical player, then the Short Game Bible is for you.

I'm a logical player, and found the book outstanding. There's a lot of explanation about why you are to do things a certain way (like the pitching above).

He's worked with (and makes mention of) Tom Kite, Payne Stewart and Paul Azinger to name three. He's worked with tons more PGA and LPGA folks as well.

If you don't know much about short game, (or don't have confidence in your own), then I'd suggest grabbing up this book.

Send us your pitch on video to studio@kelrosagolf.com and we'll post our reply for everyone's benefit.

To assist in pitching, there is such a lot that can vary between the type of shot your are playing, setup, swing mechanics, balance, etc. it is far easier to see your swing and then "fault & fix".
