  • lob shot and stance

I've broken 100 and its time to start working on the short game as thats whats killing me.

I had 4 or 5 shots last round that I needed to get over a bunker and the length of the shot was roughly 20 yards. My question is when I open my wedge then the stance where do I swing along. Is it the original swing path before I move my front foot back or do I swing along the new "open stance toe line" path. If I swing along the new toe line path I feel like I'm really cutting across the ball, if I swing along the regular swing path before I opened it then the backswing feels odd.

    thanks guys!

Swing down your feet line (open to the target) and always aim the face at your target. You regulate the hight of the shot by how much open you go AND Steepen your decent by adjusting your hand/wrist action. The power of the swing also regulates both cary and hight.

Work those 3 elements and you have all the tools at your displosal for any shot.

The shot that goes the higest and shortest is really a full swing with the body aiming very very open and the hands/wrists just exploding down on the ball. You might get 10 hards, but straight up.

I've seen loads of people stand open, swing and "thin it" 50 yards through the green when trying to do the lob. The only time I would be prepared to try it is if the lie is a bit fluffy. Most of the time I'll just drag the ball up and over the bunker with the sand iron.

If you don't already have one, get a nice 60ยบ wedge.

secondly, that "cutting across the ball" feeling is correct and is illustrated by hitting that same shot off a fairway or other tight lie where there is enough contact on the face to impart spin. If it spins the ball will either check hard left or hard right.

its a very delicate shot and require a lot of practice to get good at. But the #1 player leaves everything around the green to his lob wedge and so do I.

The lob shots quite hard shot to master. Quite risky, but the ball lands softly. I would only attempt it if I Had a nice lie and the grass wa nice and thick ensuring i wouldn't thin it. What happens if the crass is cut fine. How then would you get the ball up? I would attempt a small pitch with my 58 degree sand-wedge and hope I wouldnt thin it with that lol. Chipping is not my forte.

Swing down the line of your open stance. The main thing to remember on the shot is, unless going for a lot of backspin, be very smooth back and through. Any unnescessary jerking in the back swing will result in a "skulled" shot across the green.
