Hit it fat.

Move the ball forward in your stance, keep the leading edge of the club facing the target while you open your stance. Then swing along your body line, trying to hit 1" behind the ball.

The sand explodes the ball out.

Under no circumstance should you actually try to hit the ball - doing so often results in hitting the ball again - from the far side of the green.

Aim an inch behind the ball and hit at it with your right hand (assuming you are right handed).

Your left hand does nothing but rest on the grip.

Try it and you may be surprised with the results.

The Basics
1. Aim the grooves on your sand or lob wedge perpendicular to the target line. This, and not the orientation of your body will determine where the ball goes.
2. Take a very open stance. Eyeballing it I would say between 40 and 30 degrees open.
3. Play the ball of the instep of your front foot.
4. Keep the bulk of your weight on your front foot.
5. To hit a thicker, shorter shot that will release (roll) towards the hole, hinge your wrists early to promote a steeper downswing, and flatten out the swing to hit a spinner that will check up.
6. Try to make contact with the sand about an inch behind the hole and create a "divot" that is about 7-10 inches long.

Perhaps he means a shallow face fairway bunker. Perhaps he means playing from wet comapct sand? I dunno

You could play a flop shot, which is what i do. A pro told me the best way to hit out of a fairway bunker cleanly without taking sand is to hover you club 3/4 of the way up the ball and when you come to take the shot you will catch it sweet without fail if your competent. Give it a try .
