how to get a ball to stop rolling quicker on a green?

i just want to know how to produce a little more backspin on the ball from around the green so i can aim a little closer to the pin. say if i am behind a greenside bunker and want to get a ball to stop quickly as i dont have to much green to work with what should i do?

More stopping power = more spin.

more spin = better compression.

better compression = cleaner contact.

cleaner contact = hitting down on the ball.

As for trying to fly a greenside bunker to a short sided pin, the flop sounds like the shot. If the lie is too tight, a little pitch that goes long is the deal. Better to be long and on than short ('cause you were trying to hole it), and in the sand.

I actually meant to write:

Play softer and shaggier greens.


As for drills, I don't have any. My swing thought for when I want to stun the ball is to try and mash it into the ground, and I play it a touch further back than I normally would (no more than 1/2 a ball).

It usually works out well.

I like the Srixon offerings as well - in fact I finished out the year with Soft Feels. Not quite as good to me as the Rev Tours, but still a good ball (and much better than any Top Flite).

You do need a ball that takes a lot of spin as well. That generally means softer, shorter distance off the tee, more likely to deviate from a mishit, less hard wearing and more expensive I'm afraid. Try out a few types if you can chipping from the same place and you notice a huge difference in their response.

Dont try this from behind a greenside bunker!
Spin comes from "proper" contact with the ball.
From your handicap accept that you dont spin the ball and allow for it.
If you are behind a greenside bunker just play a chip with your most lofted club (SW, unless it is a baldy lie) and deal with the putt.
A flop shot at your level would not be the way to go, in my opinion.

fahie - i have also noticed that on chip and pitch shots - making sure the clubface doesn't turn over but goes towards the target - this produces more stop for me. Of course as all the other posters sat ball first clean contact is number 1 requirement

You shouldnt be trying to get spin/bite on a chip, it only makes it harder to judge/control distance as you will get different amounts each time.
The % shot is the one that rolls out to a stop.
Then you can learn to judge backswing with distance.

The best way to put spin on a chip is a steep angle of approach and FIRM left wrist, no flippy stuff here. Too steepen the angle lean towards the hole with most of your weight and keep it there.

However having said that, you really only need bite when there is no other way, has said it is a bit unpreditable, for chipping I always try to get the ball rolling as fast as possible, betweeen one or two yards on the green then run out to the hole.

Here is how you do that, looks at your clubs this way:
PW - is 1 to 1, will roll as far as it flies
9i - 2 to 1, rolls twice as far as it flys
8i - 3 to 1
7i - 4 to 1
etc... on through to 3i if you have to, usually these 4 will cover most shots. Looks at the shot figure out how far your ball is to the one yard point on the green, then figure the pin from that point will tell you which club to use. Once this is done, I could care less about the pin, I just work at landing my ball to the spot and trust the roll out. This is pretty bullet proof.

Look at the spot on the green to the pin like it was a putt, of course adjust for uphill and downhill, downhill a PW might be 2 to 1, uphill a 9i might be 1 to 1, but idea renains the same get the ball on the ground fast, and turn the roll out into a putt.

I have even gone so far as to stand on my spot and pretend I was putting, just to check the angle. I don't try to get close, I try to make them all. Give it try I think you might be pleasantly surprised. Good luck, good chipping.

Don't forget to take into account the course conditions and the effects that will help, or hinder back spin. Some greeens due to their slope direction, firmness/softness, moisture content (or lack of), the direction of the grain will impact how much the spin on the ball, will bite, or release. Also, the lie of the ball, and course conditions (wet/dry/grain direction) will have an influence on how much spin can be placed on a ball. GJS
