  • Putting Drill, "The Gimme".

    Greetings,

    I got bored sometime last year so I made up this drill to practice putting, I call it the Gimme.

    The Gimme

    Setup

    On the putting green. Put one tee 5 steps from the hole for the starting position. Put another tee 1 step past the hole for the out of bounds limit. You can also put two tees, one on each side of the hole 1 step from the hole to make a half circle gimme area just like on a snooker table. You can use any distance as long as you maintain a 5:1 distance ratio.

    The gimme area is the area from the hole to the tee 1 step past the hole. Anything outside of the gimme area is out of bounds. If you also put two tees, one on each side of the hole, that also defines the gimme area.

    Rules

    No third putt allowed. Ever.
    Second putt allowed only if the ball is in play after the first putt.
    No gimme. For a ball to score, it must be played.

    A ball is in play if:
    It stops within the gimme area on the first putt or;
    It stops anywhere if it lips out on the first putt.

    A ball is out if:
    It doesn't completely reach the hole on the first putt or;
    It ends up completely outside the gimme area on the first putt or;
    It doesn't drop after the second putt.

    A ball that is out can be removed before any other putt is made. A tee defining the gimme area is considered a movable obstruction so it can be removed if it obstructs the player on his second putt, it must be replaced after the player played his ball. A ball still in play can be lifted if it obstructs the player on any other putt, it must be replaced once it's time to play it.

    Scoring and Logic

    +2: First putt hole out. To par: Birdie.
    +1: Second putt hole out. To par: Par.
    -1: First putt doesn't completely reach the hole. Never up, never in, Wuss!
    0: Any other putt.

    Playing the game

    You can play by yourself or with other players. Each player starts with 3 balls. Once all his balls are played, he records his score and picks up his balls. The next player then plays his 3 balls and so forth until all players have played once and that makes a round. Play as many rounds as required until a winner is declared. You can score either by a) highest score for fixed number of balls (ex.: 15 ball game then count points) b) lowest number of balls for fixed score (ex.: 15 points game then count balls played) c) first to score fixed number of points (ex.: 21 points game regardless of balls played). In case of a draw, play one ball rounds sudden death until a winner is declared.

    Enjoy.
