  • Leaving putts short!!

Ok, i'm playing really well from tee to green. I feel my Driving, iron play and short game (off the green) is of scratch handicap quality, yet my putting is a 9 handicap.

I do my preshot routine, walk round the hole looking at the break, go behind the ball and choose the line, a few swings to feel the swing i need, now when it feels like it is perfect to send the ball 2 feet past the hole..... step up take one last look then hit it.... sure enough 8 times out of ten, im a foot short. It's had NO chance of going in even though its on the exact line i predicted more often than not.

I feel like i'm not accelerating through the ball as much as i'd like to send the ball past the ball. When i purposely take a longer swing to try and find the extra 3 foot, i send it about 6 foot past, I'd prefer to be a foot short because i miss 3 of those for every 1 I make first time.

Any drills on finding the correct tempo because i think i've concentrated on keeping the same length back and through too long so I don't accelerate enough.

    Thanks Rich

    Hi Rich.

I find sometimes that even when I've got the weight of my putter perfectly adjusted to the practice green, sometimes the real greens move at a different speed. To compensate for this, I grip up or down on my putter. This often is all I need to do to start finding the 'jeez, but for 2 inches, that would have dropped' speed.

It may be your ticket to success. Try holding your putter closer to the butt end when you're leaving it short - and see what happens.

      Hi ya richie,

Well being a 24 h/cap I don't know if my advice would be of any use but I have changed the way I put as I was doing exactly the same taking 3 / 4 puts on the green because I was not geting my distance correct and leaving it too short. I worked on this and now the only thing I have changed is I am not looking at the ball when I put but look at the hole / flag, as I use to just look at the ball. This has had great results with me and now I am either on 1 / 2 putts.

      Hope it helps
      Cheers
      Mark
