  • Pelz and flexibility

I am about half way through Pelz Short Game Bible. I am practicing the Finess swing.

My problem is I cannot get to 10:30. I do not have the flexability to get
    to more than about 9:45.

I have just recently fix my power game swing by limiting my backswing
to the range of my flexibilty. And this has dramatically improved my game.

My question is should I modify Pelz 7:30 9:00 and 10:30 position to
    something that fits me?

modify it to fit your body, you have enough clubs you wont have to worry about gaps in distance.

      Doug, you've got it.

For me, 10:30 is a full swing. I use 7:30 and not-quite-9:00 swings, myself. If I was more flexible, I'd add the 10:30.

Although, it would be interesting to see a non-coil 9:00 swing (and distance and accuracy) vs a coil 9:00 swing; just to compare. I guess I've got something to try the next time on the range.

Just a bonus from the Pelz file that I've developed (or maybe I didn't, but I haven't read about it!)

Need to keep the ball low? Haven't developed your punch shot yet? Try the Pelz 9:00 swing!

"But wait," you say. "I haven't got a yardage for 9:00 with anything beyond my PW!"

No problem, here's the math. Take your yardage to the pin. For arguments sake, we'll say 80 yards. Take half of that yardage (40) and add it back (120). Now take your 120 yard club, and make a 9:00 synchronized turn (no coil). Voilà! A low runner that goes about 120 yards.

I've used it a few times (trial and error showed me that doubling the yardage (160) results in a 'too long shot' for 9:00, but 1.5 yardages seem to be better. YMMV), and it works pretty well. We've now got a par 3 (fairway under reconstruction) that's an 80 yarder, and dead into the wind. I've been hitting 9:00 PW's (my 120 club) and it's been working out quite well.

        Hi Doug,

I don't know much about Pelz teachings but maybe I should as he has a good following. I have seen pictures of him and he does not look that flexible himself

A simple way to increase body turn is allowing your left heel to come up on the backswing, it was always recommended by Nicklaus.

As a proud owner of his short game bible I can now understand the question better.

Something to remember about his backswing positions is that you should not seek to produce "coil" . Allow the hips, torso and shoulders to rotate together all the way through the swing. If you have flexibility problems with the 10:30 position then allow a soft bending of the left arm.
