  • shanking half and three quarter swings

Adam...I'm interested in your progress. I too, am currently having issues with any non-full shot with my 52, 56 & 60 degree wedges (i.e. three-quarter shots). When the dreaded s-word went into my other irons, I utilized the Inside Approach to help remedy my swing path. Unfortunately, the Inside Approach hasn't seemed to help me with my three-quarter wedges. Hopefully you have straightened things out. If so, please post any helpful tips. Thanks.

A regular playing partner recently had the same struggle. He came by to hit some balls on tape. He noticed that he's really driving with his trailing foot, causing him to come out of the shot (stand up). When he doesn't create seperation with his arms to compensate, he shanks it. It's more prevalent in his half-swings, as this less aggressive swing allows his arms to stay connected. Just a thought created by a similar sounding situation.

hitting the ball off the club's hosel, causing it to shoot dead right -- comes from a severe in-to-out swing path, resulting in the clubface pointing to the right of the target after impact. This causes the heel to lead into the ball, encouraging contact on that part of the clubhead.

Fix: Focus on extending the club, and your arms, to the left after impact. This will fix your path and help the hosel work away from the ball so you can make solid contact with the center of the clubface.

hope this is of help to you .good luck

        Dear Adam,

I know what you are going through. I have had every variation of the sha*ks you can think of. I am currently in "Remission"..hehe.

At the beginning of the season, I was doing the same as you. Shanking shots that were not full swings. I was able to fix it overnight and I will offer this to you only for your information. It may or may not work for you.

I was swaying (sliding) my hips and really shan*king badly. Try quieting your hips way down, by this I mean avoiding any lateral movement and only rotational movement; at first only allow very little movement at all of the hips but make sure you rotate the shoulders as they should.

Once I did this, it was like night and day. Give it a try. It might help.

weight too much on balls of feet, standing too close or far from the ball, too flat a swing plane, too much angle between club shaft and left arm at address, loosing spine angle at the top of the back swing
          should be one of those

Re: shanking half and three quarter swings

            Hi There
I had a similar problem but was not actually shanking the ball, I was hitting the ball with a wide open club face that sent it way right. It was most noticeable on the range when practising a lot of pitching shots, suddenly I could hit nothing straight exept a chip shot where my wrists did not cock.

The problem with my wedges was due to swinging down with my hands too far ahead of the ball at impact causing a very late release of the wrists, this kept the club face wide open. The remedy was to release the wrist cock much earlier in the downswing.

            Hope this helps
            Brian
