Someone who's bought the Dave Pelz bible on putting, rather than skim read it in their local bookshop will correct me, but I think Dave Pelz identifies two schools of putting stroke - the pendulum, and the open/closed (but he doesn't call them those). Surely this drill is only useful for the latter? As Scrags says, pendulum putters *shouldn't* open or close the face through impact?
