hi all
what is the recommended set up when playing 60-100yd pitch?
this is currently my weakest shot mainly down to incorrect set up.
i usually end up pulling the ball left

Hey Slats,

I'm no expert, but lately I've been having good results as follows......

High Lob type shot with obstructions between ball and green, ball forward in stance, off left heel or just inside, open stance, open face, full easy swing.

Normal Pitch shot, no obstructions, ball back in stance, stance square to target line, face square, then vary swing length or club selection depending on distance to be flown.

These are "generally" type advices, ball lie and other relevancies not withstanding...

Recommended by who is the question unfortunately.

A few weeks ago I was having real problems with my chipping, two books, two dvds and the internet later I had no less than 5 different "transforrm your short game" recommendations.

After some trial and error I've picked one that seems to suit - I think you'll have to do the same with the pitch shot; for what its worth I play the pitch with the ball just forward of middle, slightly narrower stance than for a full shot, square or very slightly open.

Hi Slats,

I improved my short game from Pelz and I can only say it works for me.

For a finesse pitch shot have your feet around shoulder width apart, back foot square to target front foot flared forward by around 30 degrees.

Have the ball centre between your ankles (as the front foot is flared it should not be between the toes).

Make a neutral grip and align your feet and shoulders parallel left of target with the clubface directly at target.

Judge the distance of shot by altering the amount of backswing, use three positions for each wedge (I use 4 wedges. imagine a clock face 12:00 above you and 6: between your feet) 1st Position 7:30, 2nd 9:00 and 3rd 10:30. swing back to these positions but always swing through to a high finish (around 11:0o o clock), this ensures that you are accelerating through the shot which is important.

Do not introduce any coiling of the shoulders and hips like in a full shot, keep the relationship between the arms and your belt buckle throughout the swing and smoothly rotate your body and arms in one unit throughout the swing to a good balanced finish, right foot up on the toe, belt buckle to target.

Allow your wrists to cock and uncock naturally without any conscious effort, allow the hands to feel dead throughout the swing, this will negate the adrenalin rush that tightens your grip when under pressure.

hi brian,
been to the range it took half a bucket before i was getting any consistency.
was hitting it sweet by the end!
narrowed and opened the stance,little weight placed on the front foot ansd no coil.

Quite a few years ago I saw this old guy really smacking the ball out there at the range.

This was in the early days of rescue type clubs - in fact more or less only TM were in the popular market - so I was interested but I hadn't admitted that I couldn't hit a long iron yet.

Nonetheless I stopped to chat. As you do. Turns out that he'd borrowed his wife's club and wasn't giving it back.

Back to today and ignoring your range heroics for the moment, now I'm actually managing to get a tee shot away, my 15 degree Benross Steel Spring (£20 in the remainder bucket) is getting as good if not better distances than some others' drivers - though tbh that might say more about them than me .

However I wonder if there is a "spec" lesson here for us? Loft, Shaft Length, Flex, Weight etc - if we can have the utilities, long putters, extra wedges that we embrace now why can't those of us that is who can't hit their 8d 46" stiff 300 yatrds plusb have drivers built to a spec that works with us rather than against us.

Perhaps Ben can help us with a design.

ive got the specs!
44" shaft which is 85-100 mph swing speed rated
13.5* loft
get set up correctly and its a doddle
actually tried to grip the club more loosly and it works.
i could whip the club through more easily
