  • Putting Thoughts......

As mentioned in another thread, last weekend, following some advice from a friend, I tried a different putting style and I wanted to get some thoughts from the masses here about both styles, pre and post change...

    (Hope that makes sense...)

Firstly, I try to use a pendulum motion, straight back and through, and whilst I am concious of trying to get my eyes over the ball, it appears I am not doing so...

During the first round on Saturday, I was putting with my old (normal) stroke and putted reasonably (or so I thought) with only a couple of 3 putts from memory. But I didn't make anything of any length all day.

Over dinner that evening, one of my playing partners mentioned he thought I was standing too far away from the ball when putting, which resulted in my putter not resting flat on the ground, rather the toe of the putter was anything up to an inch or 2 higher than the heel. He said this would cause me to pull all my putts left. Which, on reflection, is pretty much what was happening.

So on Sunday, I tried to be very concious of standing much closer to the ball and having the sole of the putter resting squarely on the ground. It felt very awkward to say the least and it will take me some time to get used to it. At this point I am unsure if I will persist, other than to say I haven't really been trying it long enough to be ablew to gauge any improvement or otherwise....

My longwinded question is (sorry for babbling on a bit) what are the chances my friend (a single figure marker) is right and should I persist...

    Cheers

I don't feel I can answer that for you. I can only give you the result of my own putting experience:

Any putt over eight feet I now lag putt, I imagine a hole six feet in diameter and aim to get the ball to stop inside this, I will then have a maximum second 3 ft putt to hole out. When putting 18 ft or more I putt looking at the hole, this gives me very good lag putts that have a high possibility of second putt success.

He may be right, it may be worth persisting, it might work for you; to quote quite unashamedly from Tommy Armour

“You can use any grip you like, take any stance you like and use any putter you like….There are players who putt very well ...with quite short shafted putters…others with long…Some…play the ball off the left foot, others off the right…others anywhere in between. One class of putter stands with the head over the ball…another with the ball fairly away…most look at the ball…some...at the hole.”

      He suggests that the only fundamental is that;

“To become a good putter the main requisites are to keep the head dead still and make the putter blade go accurately to the hole”

        OK...

I'm sticking with the new putting thought...

In yesterays round, I had 30 putts, with 2 3 putts and 7 1 putts.

Once I get comfortable with this, then I think I'll have found something.

        Cheers

          Putting is very much feel.

Your eyes should be over the ball when putting and stand tall to let the arms hang (not much knee bend).

Next practice, just before you pull the trigger, drop a ball from the bridge of your nose (between the eyes) onto the ground. This will indicate your head position. Ideally, the ball should hit the ball that is on the ground.

On the putting surface, once committed to the line, only focus on the pace of the putt. Trust it. Brush it (like painting) rather than hit it.

          Must go
