  • 'Pop-up' chips

    Guys

    Need some help working out how to get my chips to pop up a little more off the face before rolling out. Im great at low running chips and high soft pitches but around the fringe I seem to have trouble getting too much roll and not enough pop, even with the SW/PW etc. How can I setup and execute a chip where the ball pops up a little distance and rolls out?

    hit more down on the ball to inpart backspin, it someting you have to work at and you have to use soft hands too, i found it only took a few hours to find out where to set the ball so i could bite into the back of the ball with my wedges, if you use a soft ball it works better but you do scuff the balls easy.
    i do find sometimes the ball really spins back a lot more than i want it too and it's hard to control the backspin, i only use it if i have too as the chip and pitch tends to give results more often than the bite shot.

      I can hit down and get spin no problem, esp on the longer type chip shots. If i try and really bite into the shorter ones around the fringe I tend to get too much roll and overshoot the flag. What I want is that softer shot that pops up and rolls out gently .. almost without backspin. Esp for chips that will roll downhill

        if its a short high shot with no run, then try a open stance abd open the club face too, aim between where your feet are aiming and where the flag is and then swing slow back and throught with soft hands and finish higher then the backswing to make sure you dont quit on the shot, the more you open the stand the more you also open the club face, you can use a pw,sw and lw and by using the same lenth swing and opening your stance and face you can control the hight of the ball and how much it runs, the higher the less ran after.
        again its one you have to work on to feel confident with, i use to go to the football park and pratice hitting over the goal post and landing on the penalty spot and then move closer to the back goal post and hit it higher and land on the 6 yard box. i think that the type of shot you want.
        it feel more like a sweeping shot where you sweep throught the ball shaving the top off the grass and not really taking a divet.

          Hi Paul,

          You could try getting the club more on its toe, this tends to deaden the shot as the ball comes off the face and prevents too crisp a contact that can send it running way past the hole.

          Bring the club closer to you so it's near vertical, this will lift the heel off the ground, you will need to turn your wrists down a little to achieve this which also helps to take the wrists out of the shot. It also stops the sole from catching the grass which can affect the flow of the shot.

          You should still hit down at the ball and position it well back with a narrow open stance.

            For a flop-type shot, widen the stance and get the hands low - this has the effect of increasing the loft on the club. Make sure you keep the club face at least slightly open thoughout the swing. Should give you a nice high, soft landing flop shot.
