  • Short Short Game Games - Skill Drills

Ok, so on Friday I will be leaving for Lanzarote and a week of sun, beer and sports.

Sadly, the golf facilities are rather limited. Driving nets (no range) and a chipping & putting practice green.

(Sure - there is a real golf course there too, but that is some distance away, and needs a planned trip to get there. I will make 2 of those during the week)

So - to cut a long story short - I need a number of good short game drills or "games" to help me stay motivated in practicing my short game.

There is only one "rule" to this ... description of the drill must be only a few lines of text and/or maybe one or two illustrations, since I plan to put them into a notebook.

Any good drills out there on the vast internet, or any drills your local Pro has been pushing at you?

    4 Putt Drill:

Place 4 balls equally spaced a meter radius around a hole on the putting green. Putt all 4 in, if you miss any then start again. Then move them out to two meters and putt all four again. Cant leave until you are finished.

Just to understand this right ... do you mean something like putting from "North, South, East & West" of the hole?

        A classic:

Take one ball, a wedge and your putter to the green. See how many times you can get up and down.

        Another:

Give yourself 2 putts to hole out on the practice green. You choose the hole.

A fun one: See just how far you can open your wedge without skulling one over the green.

Yes that's right. Makes it more difficult if you rotate each time for different lies

              And another.

              What you need:

10-golf balls, a sand wedge, 11-other golf clubs

¨ Put your 10-balls on the ground in a pile.
¨ Pace off 3-yards and put a club on the ground perpendicular to the direction you’re going to hit the golf balls.
¨ Then take 2 steps and lay another club down as you did the first one, repeat this until the only club you have left is your sand wedge.

The object of the game is to hit your first ball so that it lands in between the first 2-golf clubs.

If it does, then try to hit the next ball in the space between the 2nd golf club and 3rd golf club and so on.

If you ever miss your space between the clubs, you need to begin again with the 1st space.

Should keep you "amused" for a while

After properly warming up, pretend you are playing 18 par three holes. On any nine holes drop a balls on the practice green at various distances, and angles from the pin. On the other nine holes consider those as approach shots that missed the green from various distances, and angles from the pin. This will give you a greens in regulation of 50%. With the nine balls on the green, you are trying to two putt, or better. With the other nine balls off the green you are looking to get up, and down with one putts at least 50% of the time. After doing this a few times you will come up with your own short game handicap which will give you a reference point for improvement. With nine two putts, and nine up, and downs you have a reference "scratch"score of 36. As an example, if you have to hit the balls 46 times to get them in the cup, you wil have a "simple" personal short game handicap of 10 which is your reference point to improve on. Don't forget to use sand bunkers if they are available for some of your up, and downs. Thrown in a couple of easy putts, and chips to help offset the longer, tougher ones. In other words practice with game like situations. GJS

Re: Short Short Game Games - Skill Drills

Only a few lines hey - I'm not the author of this game 'Par 18'.

Place 9 balls around the green where you would ordinarily miss. Chip n putt out each ball.

Your goal should be set before your play. Mine is 21. So I'm only allowed to be 3 over.

Take all you clubs with you and don't be wedge dependant.

                  Cheers

Oh btw - record all your scores and do a few times a week from different areas from the green.
