  • Putts per round

Hello all I am a 15yr old aspiring golfer. I eat sleep and dream golf. I am continuing to become a better and better putter every time I practice. I averge about 33 to 34 putts in an 18 hole round. Is this bad or good.

    Re: Putts per round

    Well, let's see.

Par is defined as the score expected of an expert playing without error on any hole counting two putts. So for example, a par 4 is two strokes off the green and two strokes on the green. This is what regulation means. We can still score 4 with three strokes off the green and only one on the green. But that would be called an up and down, a save or even a blue collar par.

In one round, there are 18 holes. With two putts per hole for par, this means 36 putts for par for this round. You say you score 33-34 putts per round. This means you score 2 or 3 less putts than par. This is good to know. It means that if everything you do off the green is perfect, you'd score 2 or 3 under par for the round.

Check this thread for some information on improving your game on the green:

      Re: Putts per round

A good reference is tour players at the top of their game. The top players are usually on average around 26 putts per round. That is good number to shoot for, but for the average player I would think 30 putts per round is very doable. I have on occasion had 20 or 21 putts per round, but that is very deceiving, because my greens in regulation for those days was awful, I got a lot of short 2 and 3 footers because I missed the green and was able to chip close. So basically you need to pay attention to both greens in reg. and putting.

Here is a good guide, it was posted some time ago in the golf articles section, but might do you good, so I cut and paste it for you.

      The A, B, C, D, and F's

"I was looking at some of the old thread here and came across this, missed it the first time around, but I really like this idea...except...as I read through it, it seemed everyone was little subjective about their grading. So lets put some exact figures on here to put folks in a more structured grading. If we assume even par to be the "A" grade, and a perfect round on a par 72 course, then:

You receive an grade of "A" for:
Fairway Hit - 14 fairways in regulation (par 3 are excluded, covered in Greens in reg)
Greens in Regulation - 18 greens for par 5s in three shots (4 of these), par 4s in two shots (10 of these), and par 3s in one shot (4 of these), so you have 18 total.

Now where it gets a little sketchy, is in putts per round and chipping, so we are going to change up a little and say if you have 36 putts per round, we are going to call it a "C", instead of chipping we will say up/down, that is one chip or pitch and a putt.

Putts per round - 26 - 29, now normally there should be 36, two putts per hole, if each green is hit in reg. but 36 is really bad putting, so 26 is going to be the "A" because the top tour player are doing that, we can't hope to do better.
Up & Down - regardless of number, you get an "A" if they all resulted in one chip/pitch, sand shot and a single putt, or no up/down attempted.

So with the ground rules for an "A" here are the other grades

      For "B":

      FH - 10 - 13
      GH - 15 - 17
      Putts - 30 - 33
Up/Dn - regardless of number, one missed (up/down not completed).

      For "C":

      FH - 6 - 9
      GH - 10 - 14
      Putts - 34 - 36
Up/Dn - regardless of number, two missed (up/down not completed).

      For "D":

      FH - 2 - 5
      GH - 5 - 9
      Putts - 36 - 38
Up/Dn - regardless of number, three missed (up/down not completed).

      For "F":

      FH - 0 - 1
      GH - 0 - 4
      Putts - more then 38
Up/Dn - regardless of number, no up/down completed.

I think this might be a better grading system and number you need to shoot for, it might also show you what you need to work on in your game.

I am on average a scratch player that sometimes floats up to 3 or 4, but mostly scratch, here are my grades

FH - have to give myself a B here
GH - have to give myself a B here to
Putts - "A" mostly, I very seldom go over 29 a round, but I do dip into the B category occassionally.
Up/Dn - Almost alway A, unless I hit allot of traps, my trap play is weak, I will drop into the B or even C category if I have three or four traps in a round, doesn't happen very often, usually I never hit a trap, I have gone several rounds and never hit a trap, probably why my trap play sucks..lol..don't do it very much."

      Hope this helps.

I think I'm an "OK putter" no more than that but even as a high eighty shooter I am always disappointed to go into the thirties for ppr because (given the rest of my game) it means I'm not chipping close enough to give myself a genuine one putt opportunity - I had a nine hole with 6 consecutive single putts the other day but as GoNavy said that's misleading because I also had 6 consecutive holes where my approach landed on the fringe.

Look at it this way; you have a handicap of 3 or 4 according to your profile so getting your ppr down to 30 or below would see you off scratch without improving your swing in any way whatsoever. When it comes to bangs per buck I know what I'd be working on if I had the rest of your game
