Re: I cant stand SLICING HELP HELP HELP!!!

    Burnie

If the slice is so severe, go on the range and try this. Aim the club to your target as normal, go to address the ball, but with your back facing the target (almost). Its extreme, but Leadbetter and Jim Flick recommend it for a severe slice so you start hitting from the inside.

Also in a normal swing, keep the club face looking at the ball for as long as possible during the first stages of your backswing.

Here is my own drill which may help you get a better feel for the swing
        1) without a club face a wall in a setup position and get as close as your hands can without touching the wall
        2) Pretend you have a club in your hand and swing without touching the wall.
        3) On the backswing make sure your left shoulder goes under your chin and on the downswing the right shoulder under the chin.

PS - have an expert or pro check your grip alignment and stance at the range

Burnie24, shorten your swing. Go to the range and practice.

Do you know exactly where you send the ball when you slice it? Can you repeat it at will and be sure of where it will land? Do you know exactly how to slice the ball intentionally? If you don't know, it will be very difficult to _not_ do it.

Do you try to help the ball up? Do you accelerate your shoulders to get more distance? Do you flop the club back on the backswing? Do you break down your left wrist on the backswing at the top?

Instead of trying to help the ball up, try to send it downward. Instead of accelerating your shoulders, accelerate your hands especially the right hand. Instead of flopping the club back, hold the position of the club relative to your arm regardless of where the club is relative to parallel. Instead of breaking down your left wrist at the top, resist by making it flat and inline with your forearm.

As you do all that, check the clubface at the top. Position yourself so that the clubface is flat and inline with your wrist and forearm or a little closed.

Another thing. As you swing towards the ball, instead of scooping it with your right hand, try to hood it by turning your right hand over. In effect, you will be crossing your wrists as you swing through.

          Practice.

Re: I cant stand SLICING HELP HELP HELP!!!

            All good replies.

Some things may actually help on the course. One is to set up normally and then move your right foot back about 9-12 inches, keeping everything else aligned normally. Go ahead and rip it! It's very difficult (and can be painful!) to come over the top from that position.

A little while back I saw a guy teeing right up against the tee box- literally so close that, had he attempted to hit from out to in, he would have broken the club. Seemed to work for him (at least off the tee).

Re: I cant stand SLICING HELP HELP HELP!!!

My best advice for this is to swing slower. Honestly, try and swing at 50% of your normal downswing speed where you are probably trying to kill it. This will do two things. Firstly you will remove a lot of tension from your arms/hands and secondly you will give your hands the time to naturally square up the club

If you swing too fast and hold on too tight ( as most people do) your hands get way ahead of the club face and it never gets the time it needs to square up. You'll also have a far better chance of the hitting the ball with the middle of the clubface which means more power

I had a revelation a few years back on a swing speed thing where the pro told me to grip it hard and rip it and then swing real easy. Guess what, the second swing was over 10mph faster than the first

Feels wrong - but it isnt !

Try it and see if it helps.

Your slice and shank will come from the same problem, an out to in swing path.

Take a look at this video, it addresses the shank but will fix both problems:

                  assuming your fundamentals are sound!
my best advice is too keep the clubface looking at the ball for as long as possible do not roll the forearms and fan the face open!
i was a habitual slicer but that little tip helped me hit 11/11 fairways with driver today.

Just thought i would share this with you. I have most of the time sliced my drives off the tee.But i have noticed that my follow through only goes to approx 10 o'clock position.i am hitting the ball maybe around the 200-220 mark. But now i am making sure of following through with my driver and 9 out of 10 drives goes dead straight. But whilst taking my shot i have to tell myself to follow through to make sure i do it. I have been doing this for the last couple of weeks now and i am starting to do it automatically now with a good finishing stace aswell that comes naturally.

Re: Slicing tip that helped me..

Slicing is mostly due to an open clubface at impact. This is a great way some to close the face but it might not work for everyone. I know from when I used to be a bad slicer that closing the club face at impact was one of the hardest things to do. Even though I knew what I was doing wrong I still kept messing up. It takes a while to make yourself do something with your golf swing, it's much easier when a pro teaches you.

Good post though, should work for many people who can't cure their slice.

                            welcome to the site
are you slicing with 1 club or all of them?
could be any number of faults!
almost certainly its down to fundamentals i.e grip posture stance and alignment!

I used to slice all the time with nearly every club. I took a few basic lessons through my local community college. Now I only slice when I try to kill the ball with my driver. If I take a nice easy swing, no problem. I don't get as much distance but it does go straight. Try taking a 1/2 or 3/4 swing nice and easy and see if that helps. I highly reccomend a few lessons as well.

                                Guys:

I was told in order to get rid of my slice I should grip the club strong (which I already new). This usually means, for a right handed golfer, to turn the left hand on the club to the right.

I was talking to someone the other day and they said I should also turn my right hand on the grip to the left as well. He said this will promote a better release. Now my right hand is more on top of the grip

Well, I tried it and I am hitting the ball straight. Can anyone tell me why this is true? And how come I don't read much about this method. Do you think it is a good practice?

                                Any comments appreciated.
