  • Scoring Fluctuations and the search for Consistency

This came out of a couple of comments on my blog...

Having reviewed my recorded competition scores (31 rounds worth) over the past 12 months, here are the stats:

Number of Rounds Played - 31 (last 2 match play matches are not included)

    Average Score - 90

    Lowest Score - 82

    Highest Score - 99

During this time my handicap has come in from 16.9 to 14.6

Have also played a couple of social rounds were the cards have not made their way to the handicapper, and my last 2 match play rounds also do not contribute. Though, that said, I would like them to.

So, I guess the thread topic here is what are your season's high, low and average scores and what, if anything, do you feel you might need to do to achieve greater scoring consistency...

    Cheers

    Hi Scragger,

It good as you keep you score but for me you are recording the wrong stats:

    You should know:

    fairways hit

    greens hit

    putts per round.

just these three will give you an idea what is lacking in your game.

To improve you don't need distance if your hitting fairways, and you don't need to hit every green, but you do need to chip and putt well............For me; everytime I have a great round and sit at home going through every shot and it is always down to putts, if I putt well I score well thats it.

You should know which part of you game got you to 82 that was different from your average and work on that.

    Hope this helps

    Ian.

When I commented on the blog the point I was really making was about expectations, i.e. if the best golfers around can have fluctuations of ten shots between rounds then maybe there's a danger that our expectations are out of wack, especially as when / if we watch golf on TV we generally get shown the guy scoring 67 not the one scoring 77. This over expectation leads to a number of things - all off which I've been guilty of in the past and am still guilty of the third.

      1. Have you ever played with anyone who after three holes declares that "this this is the worst I've ever played" - everytime

      2. Do you know anyone who after ONE bad round goes off to work on (fiddle with) their swing rather than accepting that it was just a bad day.

      3. Do you see people repeatedly going for shots without considering the consequences of not getting it perfect.

I am trying to accept that I will be inconsistent no matter how much better I get and that getting frustrated over it only prevents me from making improvements.
