can you guys help me out?
how many reasonably straight putts would you expect to sink from 4 feet to 6 feet.......out of 9 putts i made ONE!
i am playing to a 22hc, and generally take 34-37 putts per round.i usually 3 putt at least once.
i am in the process of trying out new putters to improve my short putts and would like a view on what % i should be reasonably expecting to make from that sort of distance.obviously 1 out of 9 is rubbish , but i don't expect to make 9 out of 9 every time either.
i look forward to seeing your views on this .

Don't beat yourself up too much, 34 - 36 putts per round is quite good.

A golf pro once told me that average tour players putt 3 foot shots with a 75% success rate, 6 foot with a 50% and 10 foot 25%. Just get it close so your next putt is a short one and practice.

As a fellow 22 handicapper I find that the key is not so much the putting (though obviously it can blow hot and cold) but the chips and short pitches.

Next time you are out keep a track how many times you leave your self a genuinely makeable first putt, i.e. how many times you chip / pitch to within 8 foot [imo the undulating 25 footer with 5 foot of break doesn't count as a genuine chance - though its a hoot when they drop].

I tend to think that 34 - 36 is quite good for someone with a handicap like Brian who's GIR stats are better than ours but, to be honest, not for us; because of the number of time a round we have a chip or little pitch on then I think "par" for us is 1.75 putts per hole or around 32 ppr.

If you really are leaving yourself a lot of real chances and not converting enough then then there was a thread quite recently on putting drills with some pretty good ones but you might find the short term answer to fewer putts lies in a short game lesson.

Longer term you need to drill the drive 280 down the middle and hit your wedge dead - that will do the trick better than anything else .

Incidentally I'd say that 9 out of 10 of my three putts are when the first was for birdie - I wonder what that says about my mental strength?

most of my chips will be around the 5 or 6 feet from the pin, but i am not converting this into a good score because i miss 90% of my putts from this range.so on an average day , i will 3 putt once, 1 putt once and two putt 16 times. but of those 16 two putts, at least 5 would be from 6 feet, some to save par, some to save bogey, but i don't make any, so although my total is 36 putts, it should be much better, how much is the question i am asking, and my new putter is on the horizon!!!

The guys on Tour are in the low 20's consistently - and you have to be to make birdies.

My PPR is 36 as a 23 capper. However, it's a misleading stat. Couple that with my 2 GIR's and my 18% U&D (on and one putt for any score), and all of a sudden 36 PPR is horrendous. My PPGIR is 2.5 - in other words, if I hit my 2 greens, I'll 3 putt one.

Why are you missing 6 footers? Over-reading? Under-reading? No feel?

alignment problem i think, been trying the odyssey 2ball putters today , felt nice and went ok but very windy so i will go back on a better day and retry the two putters i trialed this morning.
