  • big divots with my irons

    Hi

when i hit my irons i tend to hit the ground before the ball which ends up slapping it a very short distance down the fairway.

this has been happening regularly for years and is very frustrating.

Its not a divot more of a hole.

    Any ideas.

Another point is when i was practicing the other day i realised that whatever club i took they all semed to go a similar distance, the lenght of a soccer pitch. This was if i used a 3 iron, 5 wood or 7 iron. Makes playing golf easy as i only need ever use my 5 wood off the tee, followed by a 5 wood up the fairway, chip on with a 7 iron and put.

I have the lightest bag in the world.

    please help

For me it seems that you leave your weight on your left foot during your backswing. That causes a reverse movement of the weight in your followthrough which often results in shots that you have described. Try starting off with 60% of the bodyweight on your right foot during backswing, keep the wight there until you start your downswing.(test it: try lifting your left foot off the ground when you have the club in the highest position in the backswing, if you can, without moving, the weight is in the right place).
At impact the weight should be behind the ball, then let it follow in the followthrough and get a full hip and shoulderturn facing your target. In this position you should be able to lift your right foot off the ground without loosing balance.
    Hope this helps!

I agree with the weight problem at setup. 60% on the back foot is good and I agree with the top position being able to left the front foot to show all the weight is on the back. But I differ slightly with the rest. The hips and shoulders should be turned facing the target before the impact of ball. Waiting until after you hit the ball causes excesive use of the arms and hands to square the club causing inconsistancies. If you get the body fully rotated, the weight back on the front foot prior to impact, then you have used ALL of your potential power.

Nick, don't get me wrong. You were correct in what was to be done and that will help Ragsi, but I am splitting hairs to refine the order of when to do it to maximize the force on the ball.

This will help you mostly with your problem of having all the clubs going the same distance. You are not getting enough force on the ball prior to impact. Turning fully prior to impact will get you there.

Take a look at my IMPACT DRILL.

Thank you Greg! I agree with you, I clearly have not explained well enough what I ment. It is very important to get the hipturn at the right time. But at the same time taking care of the weightshift through impact, that it does not happen too soon.

          Thanks for that

I read what was put on the forum and then had a couple of swings with a club prior to taking your advice.

My hips at the moment are facing to the front on impact, which is where they start. 90 degrees to the target. They turn to face the target after i have hit the ball, you could say that once i make impact then my arms drag my hips round during the follow through................ i have a classic finish position as i watch the ball roll 20 feet!!!

Correct me if i'm wrong but what you are saying is that my hips need to be facing the general direction of the target prior to the impact with the ball.

this would therefore mean that i need to turn my hips ahead of my downswing and whilst transfering my weight to my left side.

I think i've got it now. Thank you.
