  • Hitting irons off hard ground?

I understand that hitting irons off hard ground is much more difficult than soft ground because you can't make a divot.

But are there any tricks for hitting irons off hard ground?

It's no more difficult if you're hitting your irons properly (ie golf ball before the earth) it's just more jarring when playing off hardpan.

What you have to watch for off hard lies is usually more distance and more spin due to better compression.

As long as you hit the ball with a descending blow then it should be fine.

Most problems with hitting from a hardpan lie is that if you are too tentative with the shot you will tend to catch it thin, or hit it fat and bounce the club off the hardpan into the ball causing a thinned shot.
